Library [22.06]

There was a problem getting into the library today.

A very large problem, which had taken over the entrance to the school.

The sphinx had arrived last night, and she showed no sign of leaving any time soon. Anyone wanting to get into the library would have to make it past her, and the only way to do that was to answer her riddle correctly.

Of course, if you get it wrong, she'll bite your head off.

(Or you could just go around to the back door of the school and get in that way.)

"No, see, a riddle is like, 'What is black and white and red all over?' The answer has to be FUNNY, or there's no point!"

The sphinx stared at him, momentarily distracted from thoughts of impending snackage. "What is black and white and red all over?"

"Oh, see, now you're just trying to cheat."

Sokka backed up a little farther. He SERIOUSLY needed to try and get a gun out Cable.

"You have to guess a few times before I'll tell you the answer."

The sphinx frowned. "Something that is actually black and white cannot be red all over, or it would not be black and white," she muttered. "Morality can be considered black and white, but that would be black and white and grey all over." She frowned some more. "Is it war?"

"No, see, I see what you're thinking there, with the red, and that's good, but since when is war ever black and white?" Sokka grinned at her. "Something that's actually black and white CAN be read all over, if it's a newspaper," he announced, with a little "ta-da!" sort of gesture. "Get it?"

She scowled. "No. And now I'm going to bite your head off." With a low growl, she stalked towards him.

Sokka backed away some more. "No, see, it's a pun... Red? Like, read? Like, after you read the newspaper all over, it's been read?"

At least he was luring the creature away from the library? Yeah, that'd look great on his tombstone: "Here lies Sokka, who died while temporarily distracting a monster that no one needed to have distracted."

"WAIT!" he yelled. "You can't eat me yet! I haven't answered your riddle!"

She stopped. It was her door now, so she wouldn't have followed very far, anyway. "Have you an answer?"

Sokka stroked his chin thoughtfully. "Yes, yes I do," he told her. "My answer is... is... YO' MAMMA!!!"

He turned tail and ran.

The sphinx pounced, but pulled up short, tail lashing, unwilling to leave her door. "I will remember you, little snack," she screamed after him.
