How to Be the Best at What You Do - Thursday, Period 2

"There's one last building block that we have time to work on this session," Logan said, starting off the class. "That last thing is sheer, plain, dumb willpower. If you're gonna be the best, you're gonna have to be determined. You're gonna be the best, there's no other option. It's gonna happen even if it's for no reason other than you won't give up. If somebody beats you, you come back. If they beat you again, you come back harder. Be persistent. Be a pest. Anything to prove that your will is just that much stronger than anyone else's."

"With that in mind, you've got a couple options today. First off, pair up and have a staring contest. If you do it right, it's basic psychological warfare. Just you and somebody else, no words, just staring at each other, getting into each others' head with nothing but a hard look, seeing who's gonna crack and turn away first. At the same time, you've gotta keep yourself from blinking. Can you control yourself enough to do that for longer than your opponent? We'll see. Of course, you don't have to just stare. Go ahead and try to distract the other person somehow. No violence, though. If you're gonna cheat, cheat smarter than that.

"Also, head's up for next week, our final week together. Don't get too sad about it. The activity's gonna be simple: find some way to use the thing you're best at to knock me off my feet. I'm serious about that. Knock me on my butt somehow and you might earn my respect. Take the week to figure out how you're gonna do that."

Johnny held up his hand, set it on fire, but kept his eyes on Lion-o's. No, he was seriously not trying to cheat. Honest.

Lion-o hadn't been expecting that at all. He was so startled that he jumped backward and blinked. "Whoa, you're on fire!"

"You can set stuff on fire? That is so cool!" said Lion-o enthusiastically. He wasn't too upset over losing. "It must really come in handy."

"Yeah. I can set myself on fire too as you just noticed. Watch..." Johnny loved showing off and immediately infused himself with flames.

"Awesome!" said Lion-o. "If I could do that, I'd never have to worry about a mutant attack again."

Lion-o was thinking of the Mutants from the planet Plundarr who were the sworn enemies of the Thundercats. He forgot for a moment that there were good mutants in Fandom and that he'd promised Turtle that he wouldn't use the "m" word.

"Mutants?" Johnny asked while still flamed up.

"Yeah, they're really bad people," said Lion-o. "They attack our planet, raid our cities, steal our supplies. My dad tried to fight them off once and they blinded him."

"Damn, that sucks for you," Johnny said, and really he was sincere. "Is it why you were sent here?"

"Not exactly," said Lion-o sheepishly. "On my planet, all of the nobles are allowed to sit on the ruling council, and as the son of the lord of the Thundercats, I was supposed to attend every council meeting. But it so boring! I started goofing off during the last meeting and the council decided that I needed to learn some responsibility."

"I hear that," he snorted. "It's why I was sent here. Freaking responsibility."

But Johnny's been here awhile now, so he's improved in that department, yes.

"I totally understand that one day I'll be the lord of the Thundercats, but that won't happen for a really, really, really long time," said Lion-o. "Besides, it won't happen until both my dad and Lord Jaga are gone. I won't have to worry about it for a while."

It's too bad that Lion-o had no idea what was coming, because he'd be responsible for his people a lot sooner that he thought.

Lord of the Thundercats. Now there was a title. "I'm just the Human Torch. Kind of a celebrity back home. Seems you've got much more responsibility than I do."

"Human Torch? That's cool," said Lion-o. "Hopefully when the time comes, I'll be ready for it. I'll have a lot of people relying on me."

Yeah, Johnny kind of did too. "Trust yourself, that's what it all comes down to."
