Journalism Class - Thursday October 6

Spider looks like he hasn't slept in a week, and has obviously been chain-smoking with his cat. If he had hair, he'd be in the middle of a bad hair day. Even his tattoos look like they hurt. He has a giant vat of coffee on the edge of his paper-strewn desk, there are take-out boxes everywhere, and he's muttering pretty much constantly under his breath.

The back of the room has fresh coffee with all the fixings, gourmet snacks and tidbits and the screens are running playback feed from last night's debate.

Again, on the screen behind him, there's a message:

Today - Villians. Discuss. Yadda Yadda. Tomorrow we'll be doing a class project tying all three themes together. Double credit.

"Okay," George begins waspishly. "Since we're being subtle and all, I have a question. Let's say Phoebe is in love with Someone, and that Someone is in love with Someone Else. Is that Someone Else a villian for basically usurping Phoebe's place in his heart? I mean, Phoebe was there first."

Phoebe is looking decidedly uncomfortable with the turn the conversation is turning.

"No," Phoebe says softly. "That person would not be seen as a villian and there would be no usurping. There are no villains and no heroes when it comes to affairs of the heart. If the Someone is in love with Someone Else, that's just the way things are. Would I be the villian for still loving someone, even if it seems that Someone is in love with Someone Else?"

George shrugs. "No, I don't think that makes you a villian." she says quietly. "I'm only saying that such a profession of love only -- confuses people."

She tries to catch Phoebe's eye. "It makes the Someone Else feel like the biggest pile of shit in the known universe."

Phoebe shakes her head and meets George's gaze. "The Someone Else shouldn't feel like shit because if Someone loves Someone Else, then I would want them to be happy together." She sighs and shrugs. "I wouldn't hate Someone Else. I would hope that I could be friends with the Someone Else because I would want Someone to be happy and I wouldn't want to be in the way." She smiles a little, hoping she's making sense. "I wouldn't stop loving Someone, but I wouldn't do anything to make Someone Else uncomfortable."

Buffy's attitude changes and she sits back, looking at both Phoebe and George.

"And there we learn the lesson of how easily someone can play the villain to hurt or cause discomfort. Villiany isn't always tangible and it doesn't always come from the sources that you expect. I wouldn't immediately be thought of as a villian. However, I change my demeanor and ask the uncomfortable questions and I make the two of you exceedingly uncomfortable and perhaps very sad or upset. This, the hero can become the villian very easily."

"Not your fault." George says with a shrug. "I'm cool."

"And that Someone Else wouldn't dream of standing in the way." George replies. "So. Whatever. Just so everyone understands each other." She looks away.

Phoebe looks down at her notebook and wonders if she could convince Spider to send her on another errand.

George sighs, feeling miserable. "And I would love for us to be friends, Phoebe." she adds.
