Journalism Class - Thursday October 6

Spider looks like he hasn't slept in a week, and has obviously been chain-smoking with his cat. If he had hair, he'd be in the middle of a bad hair day. Even his tattoos look like they hurt. He has a giant vat of coffee on the edge of his paper-strewn desk, there are take-out boxes everywhere, and he's muttering pretty much constantly under his breath.

The back of the room has fresh coffee with all the fixings, gourmet snacks and tidbits and the screens are running playback feed from last night's debate.

Again, on the screen behind him, there's a message:

Today - Villians. Discuss. Yadda Yadda. Tomorrow we'll be doing a class project tying all three themes together. Double credit.

((OOC: The player is aware that there have been four themes. Spider is just very tired.))

Phoebe shakes her head.

"Sorry, I guess the last few days and the campaign for student council has gotten to me a little more than I wanted it to. I just watched someone be ostracized by her friends for doing what is in her nature to do. She made a deal with the devil to protect others, putting herself between the devil and them. She's being treated like a villain and it bothers me."

I dont treat no one like a villian unless they got a gun to my head... *slight smile* and even then.....

Phoebe smiles at him.

"There is a difference between villian and kink...or so I hear."

I aint talkin about nuthin strange, girl... just a good ol knock down brwl...
wheres *yer* head at?

Phoebe smiles again, a blush tinging her cheeks.

"I have no idea where that comment came from. However, just because you have a brawl with someone, I agree that it doesn't necessarily make them a villain." She ponders things for a moment. "Okay, say someone is in love with someone, but that someone seems to be in love with someone else. Is the first someone being a villain because they still carry a torch?"

well now.. I cant help get past the thought that thats just.. normal?
*pained look*

Phoebe realizes that she may be making Jayne uncomfortable and tries to explain her views in a different way.

"A villian doesn't care about the feelings of anyone around them. They're just in it for personal gain."

right, and since we both care about everybody in this whole scenario, then no ones a villian, got it? *is quieter when he says it, but he doesnt look happy*

Phoebe looks at him for a long moment and then nods. "Alright. There is no villain in that scenario."

Gao yang jong duh goo yang...
*shakes his head, feeling somehow like he didnt actually win that one*

Phoebe isn't aware there was something to win in that discussion. She listens to what Buffy is saying to her and drops her eyes back to her notebook.

George finally looks at Phoebe, feeling distinctly uncomfortable. "Not unless that first person continues to actively persue that someone. Especially if the other person that that someone thinks they may be in love with wants a chance to figure out their feelings first. I mean, that only confuses the issue more." she says haltingly, then pauses. "If that made any sense whatsoever." To hide her mortification, she makes a big show of enjoying her now-tepid coffee.

Buffy nods. "Exactly. If the person you're pursuing, Phoebe, is in love with another, the kindest thing you can do is back off and leave the happy couple alone. What to you may seem like something being done out of love could actually wind up being what causes the others pain. Causing others pain is definitely something that falls into the real of villainy."

George covers her face with both hands. "Maybe the good Professor can teach all of us a lesson about the inherent beauty of subtlety" she mutters.

"I was being subtle," Buffy says calmly. "Now had I stated that obviously Phoebe is in love with someone that is in love with someone else and is trying to decide if she should pursue that person or back off, that would have not been using subtlety."

Buffy writes something down in her notebook, then looks at Phoebe. "How are you doing after your attack?"

Phoebe is turning all kinds of colors as she listens to Buffy. When she asks about the attack, she has to resist the urge to smack the other girl. She hasn't told anybody about the problem she had a few nights ago.

Phoebe swallows. "I'm fine. It's no big deal. I seem to be healing quite well."

Beka hears this and goes still. "Phoebe...?" Her voice is soft, but she's very angry. "Someone hurt you?"

Phoebe looks at Beka and her eyes are begging her not to question her any further...at least right now. "It was no big deal...I'll be okay..."

George, still pretending to work hard at taking notes, raises her brows.

Phoebe has noticed that George avoids looking at her and is confused and hurt by this. She goes back to writing things down.

Beka notices Phoebe's discomfort and offers a sympathetic smile.
