Galactic Vacationing [Wednesday, Period Five]

This afternoon the class would have noticed that the Doctor was nowhere in sight. The more observant would also have noticed that the Danger Shop was set up in an unholy combination of space-age tiki bar and seraglio with Seely leaning against the bar chatting to one of the many scantily-clad, brightly-coloured patrons.

He straightened when he saw the class. "I'm afraid that the Doctor can't be here today," he said. "And I couldn't make sense of his lesson plan, so instead of going to a Welsh gravel quarry, we're going to be doing something a little more exotic."

He grinned broadly as he gestured around the room. "As anyone whose ever watched Galaxy Quest or Space Battles knows, the universe is full of places like this, and people like these, so you're going to practice dealing with the natives. They're very friendly, so it shouldn't be hard."

[Wait for OCD up! Post away!]

"You think?" Cal asked, holding back at least his snort, which helped him give a bit of a friendlier, amused smile, as he tilted his head slightly. "I think it's a bit on the pale side, myself."

Which he thought even around people with normal skin tones, much less around this brightly fleshed batch.

The girl nodded. "Everyone in these parts is very bright," she said. "It's very rare to see someone as pale as you."

"I'm not exactly from these parts," Cal offered. "That might explain why. Cal, by the way. Hi."

...which, he realized, kind of rhymed with pale, in a weird, sticky kind of way, and made him wonder if this was a people fond of epithets, in which case Cal the Pale could be kind of catchy.

"M'chell," the girl replied. "Have you come from very far?"

"I couldn't honestly tell you," Cal admitted, "because I don't really know how far I've gone. On the road of life, however," he continued, suddenly feeling rather poetical, a bit of the Muse tickling at his ribs again, "distance is merely relative."

M'chell grinned. "A poet too," she said.

Cal shrugged modestly, though he was turning a little pink. Hey, maybe now he could fit in better.

"It's genetic," he explained.

"A race of poets? Sounds lovely."

"Well, not a race, really," Cal said. "More like...a sub-race? A culture. Greeks, for the record. Fathers of poetry, philosophy..."

"How wonderful."
