Karaoke For Fun And Profit #5 [Tuesday, Period 5, 6/10]

The night club simulation was gone, and in its place was a theater stage. "I thought a change of scenery was called for since we're covering show tunes today," said Mike. "These are basically songs that were part of a musical, and in some cases, have become popular songs in their own right, outside the context of the original musical. The show tune used to be very popular through the late 1940s, so this is a genre that works better with an older karaoke crowd. However, musicals seem to be making a comeback these days, so a good show tune is definitely something to have on your karaoke playlist."

"One of the best known show tunes is a little song from a Broadway musical called South Pacific Tropical Ocean. I thought it was especially appropriate this week," he added with a grin before going ahead and singing his own version.

[A very special thank you to [livejournal.com profile] mistressofblack for helping me out with today's workshop!]

She most likely would've have passed out on the beach did he not take the wine from her. Amber was a very lucky and grateful girl.

"Thank you for seein' me back," she replied quietly. "Would have been a challenge goin' back alone that's for sure."

"Anytime, Amber. I can't seem to resist helpin' out people."

"Is that what you do for a livin'? Help out overindulgent idiots?" she asked, grinning.

He laughed and grinned. "Not quite. Usually it's folks who've been backed in between a rock and a hard place. Like other guys tryin' to run them outta business or just trying to run them off, period." He gave her a very serious look, "I don't like people who prey on others. Particularly those who can't fight back."

Amber stared back and sort of nodded in understanding. "You seem like a guy anyone would befriend easily, Murdock. Too bad you're older than me; I'd drag you along with me everywhere," she told him, smiling a bit. "I don't see how you're crazy at all."

"'Ol me? Naw, I ain't nothin' special," he shrugged dismissively. "That's a nice sentiment, Amber. If I were younger," he turned just a bit red then, "I'd be all for gettin' dragged everywhere. 'Sides," he grinned, "you're only ever as old as ya feel."

"You remember the crazy bit, huh?" Dang, he was kinda hoping she'd forgotten that tidbit. "That was, uh, me just foolin' around. You know, crazy like silly crazy. Or somethin'." Sometimes he could own up to it, no problem. Others...well, it tended to drive people off.

Amber really liked Murdock; she was so sure he made friends easy. "...and you can't be that old, right? Just a little older than me is all," she laughed lightly.

"Yah, you betcha, one memory among few," she admitted with a rueful grin. "Silly crazy is totally cool and I appreciate anyone with the same personality." Amber just tended to drive people off sometimes with her crazy self. Oh well.

"Well, if you went by the current year, I'd be waaay old," he grinned. "So I reckon a few years *now* like 15. at least ain't that much 't all."

"Really?" he asked innocently. Oh lord, what else did she remember? Dangitall, he couldn't remember half of it. "Same personality, eh?" he chuckled at that. "Somethin' tells me I might be a tad bit crazier than you." Like scores of doctors.

"You're one of those time travelin' people too? What year are you from? I'm from 1999."

Giggling she commented, "Oh, I don't know about that but you can always try to make me believe it."

"86. Hey," he grinned, "That means we're a bit closer in age than we thought. Relatively speakin'."

"Give it a few days, and I'm sure you'll hear all about me doin' some crazy bit on the radio. Those squirrels are deranged."

"Thirteen years; not bad at all," she chuckled. "I think it will be kind of strange goin' back to my own time period after bein' here for so long."

Amber shook her head. "I knew there was a reason I ought to listen to the radio more often."

"Oh, I agree," he nodded. "If I tell my buddies 'bout stuff like the internet," he shook his head a little, "they'd think me crazier than usual."

"It's...interestin'. I mean, on one hand, you can keep up with what's goin' on, but on the other," he shrugged a bit, "everyone knows what everybody else is doin'. Spyin' squirrels. Sometimes I think they get a bit too personal. Like that night they dragged me in there. I swear, I didn't want to know some of that stuff. Really."

"I love the internet but it's nothin' new to me, just now with lots more stuff."

She nodded, gravely, though her eyes swam with amusement. "Little stinkers aren't they? I try to behave myself but you know what? Doesn't matter cause everythin' can totally get twisted around to mean somethin' else."

"I think it was around during my time, just many folks didn't know about it and it wasn't as if computers were everywhere back then."

"Tell me 'bout it," he rolled his eyes a little. He still wasn't completely over that bit it said about his intentions towards Millie. Danged squirrels. Or was that the radio host? "A buddy of mine does radio," he suddenly piped up. "In fact, he's on Tuesdays. You know Reno?"

She nodded, not really knowing at all.

"Oh yah, you betcha I know Reno. Not really well mind, but I like him just fine. You two are buddies you say?"

"Oh yah! He's my TA. He's a pilot too. Pretty good one from what I've seen in class."
