Karaoke For Fun And Profit #5 [Tuesday, Period 5, 6/10]

The night club simulation was gone, and in its place was a theater stage. "I thought a change of scenery was called for since we're covering show tunes today," said Mike. "These are basically songs that were part of a musical, and in some cases, have become popular songs in their own right, outside the context of the original musical. The show tune used to be very popular through the late 1940s, so this is a genre that works better with an older karaoke crowd. However, musicals seem to be making a comeback these days, so a good show tune is definitely something to have on your karaoke playlist."

"One of the best known show tunes is a little song from a Broadway musical called ~~South Pacific~~ Tropical Ocean. I thought it was especially appropriate this week," he added with a grin before going ahead and singing his own version.

"I couldn't pass up the opportunity to do something related to Tropical Ocean," said Mike. "But seriously, there is a lot of popular music out there that's originally from musicals or stage productions. I'm sure we can come up with something."

"I reckon that's true. I do have something in mind, actually, but I'd like to hear what you got too." He shrugged, "Who knows? You might have something better," he grinned.

"Well, just looking at pieces sung by the male leads in Tropical Ocean, there's Younger Than Springtime (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ii465lXLp8w) and Some Enchanted Evening (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=joq6SMfV6VQ)," suggested Mike.

"Those are good," he nodded. He'd have to remember the second one for something later. "But I was kinda thinking of something from My Fair Gal (http://youtube.com/watch?v=fVHW7tONOhQ)."

"Good choice!" said Mike. "I definitely approve."

"There's something about that older stuff, ya know? Some of those folks, it wasn't just singing. It was like they were baring their souls to ya."

"It's timeless," agreed Mike. "There's a reason why the Rat Pack will always be a part of Las Vegas, no matter how many Keven Federlines come and go."

"The Rat Pack," he nodded. "I hear ya."

"Kevin who?"

"He's some wannabe who married a pop star and divorced her, then used his notoriety to launch a career. He tends to play a lot of shows in Vegas, or he's throwing a party in Vegas," explained Mike.

"Sounds like some kinda sucker who took advantage of a poor lady." Give him a break, he has no idea who his wife is. "He don't sound all that impressive to me."

"I've heard him sing. Believe me, the DJ at the club was more impressive," said Mike.

Murdock made a disgusted face. "That bad huh? Ugh. Let me guess; dude can't carry a tune in a bucket?"

"He doesn't even sing," said Mike. "He raps."

"I heard about that stuff. Still not quite sure what to make of it yet."

"Now, I happen to be fond of rap myself, but you've got to have at least some talent to pull it off. Musical skills also help," said Mike. "You don't see me cashing in on my auntie's name to jump-start a music career. I paid my dues."

"I hear ya. Some of those 'singers' they get now days." He cringed. "A cat sounds better. Who's your Auntie? If you don't mind me asking."

"My auntie is none other than Gladys Knight. I got to join the Pips one summer and go on tour with her," said Mike. "Now, she's better than any of these pop starlets leading the club scene these days."

Murdock boggled a bit. Ok, maybe a lot. "... Gladys Knight? You serious?" He eyed Mike a bit. "You're pullin' my leg. Ain't ya?"

"That's cool!" he grinned. "Don't think I've ever met anyone who had a famous relative."

"I did meet Rick James (http://www.geocities.com/leeslaundry/photos/85rocknroll.jpg) once. Helped out a friend of his."

"Rick James. Now there was an interesting man," said Mike. "It's a shame about him, really."

Murdock frowned. "Why? What happened? I just saw him a few months ago and everything seemed fine."

Uh oh.

"By chance, do you remember what year that was?" Mike asked tentatively.

"You mean the couple of months ago?" He smirked a bit. "Yah, I'm one of those time-travel dudes. Though apparently not as far traveled as others. And it was 86. Still is for me, kinda."

"Where I come from, Rick died in 2004," said Mike.
