Basic Auto Mechanics, Session 3, Monday period 4

The students found themselves back in the garage this week, still with a work area for each of them.

"Good afternoon," John said. "Last week, we covered part of the basic maintanance you need to do for a car, with changing the oil. This week, we're going to cover something that you may find yourself needing to do on the side of the road -- changing a tire." As he had the week before, he demonstrated the proper technique first.

"Okay," he said, when he finished. "Your turn."

Again, Cal was carefully trying to pay attention to the demonstration, wanting to pick this up, to at least know the basics even if it turned out that, in practice, he couldn't do jack.

Michael was watching, and trying to figure out how his powers might make it easier.

Except the obvious way.

Kevin had spent a lot of time in cars after getting kicked out of his home as young teen. He had changed a couple of tires, but he still watched intently, not wanting to miss any helpful hints.

Lois was paying close attention. She had never changed a tire before and she figured she'd have to do it at least once in her lifetime.

Lucas watched, figuring John's technique was very much the same as Uncle Keith's.

Dick had changed tires before, but they were armor-plated with retractable guards and more anti-theft devices than was strictly necessary. So this would be a little different.

Lois had a little trouble getting the lugnuts off but after she had managed to do it she had little trouble with the rest of the tire-changing process.

When it was his turn, Lucas changed the tire with very little difficulty and found himself enjoying class.

Cal got to work with determination, but also with a bit of nervousness, but, hey, it turned out all that working out he was doing was beneficial for more than just building up a certain, cloaking body type. The lugnuts, the tires, barely had him breaking a sweat. That all came from worrying about messing up royally.

Dick went ahead and changed the tire. And the Joker got away. It wasn't too tough once you got past the tedious process of turning the thing to lift the jack.
