Networking to Success, Wednesday, Period 1 (5/21/08)

"Networking is about more than meeting people," Nathan said once the group had gathered. "It's learning how people you meet can be useful to them and - just as important - how you can be useful to them.

"One of the first ways you can be useful is by being what's called a connector. You may not be able to help someone in front of you, but you know someone who can. Think of it like when your doctor gives you a referral, only more personal and less likely to involve needles."

Nathan grinned. Nathan liked to think he was funny.

"Today I want you to connect. Take people in the group and introduce them to other people. Don't just give names, help make the connection. State why you think the two of them will get along. 'This is Jane Smith, she breeds Dalmatians. Jane, this is my good friend John Doe, he's looking to buy his kids a puppy.' For the purpose of the class you can make it up if you have to, but bonus points to anybody who can remember anything from the introductions you did last week.

"The more connections, the better," Nathan said. "It earns good karma for when you'll need something later on. So good luck and Lana and I are here if you have any questions."

"Oh." Andrew shuffled uncomfortably. "How did he seem?"

"Like Liir," Romeo shrugged. "He was preparing for a trip out of town, so we saved conversation."

Andrew nodded thoughtfully. "Well, I hope his trip goes okay. He was supposed to go with Professor Ambrose, but he apparently had to leave unexpectedly. I, um, well... we haven't really been talking in a general kinda talking sense lately."

"Oh. Oh." Romeo was able to connect the dots on that one, yes. "I wouldn't have mentioned him if I had known that. I've been preoccupied of late."

"I hope everything is all right." Meaning for Liir's trip and for the rest of it.

"No, it's okay. I'm glad to hear that he's still planning on making his trip. It's kinda important to him," he said.

"Things have just been so very... big lately," Andrew continued, not knowing how else to state things. "Lots of unexpected happenings, you know?"

Tucker's prom was supposed to be last Friday. It worried him that he hadn't heard anything back from his brother. No one seemed to be answering the phone back home.

"There's always so much going on here," Romeo agreed. "And when you seem to be on solid ground, the island decides to move to France. I would call it unexpected if I ever had any idea what to expect."

"And I thought Sunnydale was strange and dangerous place to live. Fandom was supposed to be my ticket to normalcy." He smiled. "I guess that's just not some people's lot in life."
