Chemistry for Anarchists, Thursday, Period 4

The first class met in a dead standard laboratory classroom, with Bunsen burners before each student and running water at each of the long tables. The teacher leaned against his desk, face unreadable as his eyes evaluated each student.

After the students were assembled, Tyler began to talk.

"So this is Chemistry for Anarchists, where you guys will learn 15 ways to blow up a 7-Eleven using only what's in the store. I'm not going to tell you to blow up a 7-Eleven; I'm also not here to shake my finger at you and tell you not to. This class is for your information.

"My name is Tyler Durden. Call me Tyler, call me Mr. Durden, whatever works. Looks like about five of you would know me from when I was here as a student." And here he glanced at Jamie first, then at Dean, Katara, Rikku, Sokka assuming they're all there and I didn't forget anyone. "That's fine, it's great to be back. Just remember I'm not one this time.

"Your mission this week is making soap. It's a basic project -- rendered fat, lye, cold water and that's it. You can add scents or color if you want to. Supplies and directions are at the workstations. Lye's nothing to screw around with." He held up one hand, showed a mottled roundish scar on the back. "This is what happens if you get lye on your wet skin.

"And the reason we start with soap? Because one of the byproducts of soap-making is glycerin." He held up a container of the clear, slippery stuff. "You can mix it back in. Makes nicer soap, makes your skin soft. Or you can add nitric acid and get nitroglycerin. That is the kind of fact we love in this class.

"But before we start on the soap, we have to do that introductions thing. Name, age, why you took the class, and" -- he smiled for the first time -- "who you would fight out of anyone, living or dead. Fictional figures included."

He left unspoken his need for a TA. He figured the introductions would let him know who he wanted.

Jo looked almost unreasonably excited about the lecture.

Ino? Was quite possibly very very gleeful about this class.

Explosions.

See, this was useful information. Sokka took notes like a mofo.

Alex looked...confused. Very confused.

Jo was exceedingly chipper as she said "Jo Harvelle, sixteen, zombie Chuck Norris."

She felt it wasn't really necessary to point out that she was there to learn to blow things up.

"Yamanaka Ino." A beat. "Ino's my first name. Fourteen, unless you count the seven months in the past and then I'm fifteen. I'm here because... um..." seriously? "I like explosions? And I really care who I'd fight so long as I can fight, you know?"

"Sokka. You don't seriously need us to explain why we're here, do you? The class is about BLOWING STUFF UP. ...And, you know, after sparring with Deadpool, I doubt there's anyone living or dead who can compare."

Alex? Still really confused. "Alex Drake. I'm fifteen. I uh. My superior officer signed me up for this, I'm not sure if he thought it was a chemistry class or that the 'anarchy' part might come in handy. I would fight Goldar."

"Dean Winchester, I'm 17. Why'd I take this class? Well, lesee, it's about blowing shit up and it's taught by a guy I used to know was pretty okay, even if he's since developed a weird facial hair fetish. Why wouldn't I take it? As for who I'd fight, I'd go with Jo and say Zombie Chuck Norris would be a cool opponent. Also? Gives an excuse for a flamethrower."

"I'm Jamie Madrox. I'm seventeen. I'm here becuase stickbug loyalty knows no age limit or time warpy paradoxes and chances are I'm going to blow stuff up," Jamie announced. "Which is always cool. And if I could fight anyone it would be Hope from Wendy the werewolf stalker. Why? Well if I'm going to have my ass kicked, I might as well enjoy the view."

Evey considered it for a moment. "I'm Evey, I'm seventeen. I'm here because over the past few years I've developed an interest in explosives, and learned a bit at the feet of one of the most famous...munitions experts in my time, before he died." That was certainly one way to put it. "I'd like to fight...well. To be honest I don't know a lot about fighting. But if I ever did engage in hand-to-hand combat, I'd want it to be at the feet of a master, because I'd want my arse thoroughly beaten by someone who knew how. So I'd probably like to fight my old mentor, the one who taught me explosives. Especially since then he'd teach me to do it right."

"I'm Rikku, I'm sixteen and I took this class because I like science-y stuff like chemistry, both 'cause you can use it to blow stuff up and because I like knowing how all the little bits go together and what makes what. And because I'm kinda an anarchist. I took down a government once, I mean, it was all crap about religion and not questioning authority and not thinking for yourself and the heck with that."

She had to consider the last one. "You mean, like, who'd be good to fight, or -- like, could I wish someone back from the dead just so I could beat the crap out of them again?"

"I'm Katara," she said, surprised this was someone she went to school with last year. She must have missed that part of radio. "I'm sixteen, and I'm here cause sometimes blowing things up might be useful." She paused, thinking for a moment. "Guess I'd fight Azula. She's a crazy Princess from my world. Keeps trying to hurt my friends."

"Eve Levine, eighteen, I'm here because it just sounded fun, and I'd fight..." She frowned. "Anybody challenging."

"Deidara. Sixteen." He paused, then shrugged. "I'm here because at home, I'm something of an expert with explosives. Mm." The blond ninja grinned, an expression that shifted slowly to something more like a smirk. "I suppose out of anyone, I would fight Itachi." Like that had gone so well the first time. Still...

Sokka raised a hand. "Is there any way to make soap that DOESN'T involve the possibility of being permanently disfigured?"

Rikku was very, very careful. And fascinated. And adding some bright citrusy notes to her batch. Carefully.
