Basic Auto Mechanics, Session 1, Monday period 4

"Good afternoon," John said as the class filed in. The place was made to look like a typical mechanic's garage and John was leaning against what was by now to those paying attention, a familiar black classic car. "Welcome to Basic Auto Mechanics. By the end of this workshop, hopefully you'll be able to perform basic maintanance and emergency repairs as needed, and perhaps even a few steps beyond that. You'll be less likely to get stranded on the side of the road, and less likely to be conned by a mechanic trying to invent problems when you do take your vehicle to a professional.

"Before I started hunting, I was co-owned an auto garage that looked very similar to this one so I do have a lot of experience with what we're going to be doing. For this first class, I'd like to go through the usual getting to know you things -- name, year, your experience with fixing cars, or experiences related to it, and why you took this class." He smiled slightly. "It'll let me know exactly how basic I need to get."

He looked around. "So who's going first?"

Lois looked pretty excited about being in this class. She loved cars.

Jo was listening, rather intently at that.

Michael was listening. He looked on this as another possible career opportunity.

Rikku bounced in her seat. All these neat machine-things for them to mess around with. Cooooooool.

Kevin leaned back against the wall, looking cool as always, and wondering if he should take off his t-shirt to keep it from getting all greasy.

Cal tried to pay as best attention as he could, but he was distracted. He was nervous. He was trying desperately not to be. It was sinking in that the last time he was in a situation like this, a classroom sort of setting, he had a great long mane of frazzled hair to hide behind.

Not so much anymore.

Kaylee didn't know much about the tech on this planet, but the fact that cars were still the mode of transport here made her just want to learn more, and at least so far, the vocabulary seemed the same.

Staring at the black car, Lucas was really looking forward to diving into mechanics again.

Dick listened and wondered how much help this class would be when it came to an... unusual car such as the Batmobile. Hopefully the answer was "some" or even "a lot."

Jack was listening intently, and trying not to drool at the car. Shiny! Nice!

and tell us what you know about these things call automobiles and why you took this class.

"Hi, I'm Lois Lane. I'm sixteen. I don't have a lot of experience fixing cars myself but when I got bored at the base I would watch the guys fix their cars. And tanks. And jets," she said. She liked watching them get all greasy. "I took this class cause I don't want to be that chick stranded on the side of the road because she can't change a tire."

John smiled at her. "That is the kind of thing I'm hoping this workshop will help you avoid."

"I'm Michael Guerin, I'm seventeen, I used to watch Hank trying to make his POS car run again, and I'm here 'cause I might end up as a mechanic."

John nodded. "Are cars something you've been interested in?"

"One of the things, yeah. It's good to have a skill."

"Hiya! I'm Rikku, I'm sixteen and I'm a ... uh, I was a junior, and I'm gonna be a senior, I'm not sure which I count as right now. We don't have cars where I'm from but we had droids and things and I love taking apart engines and putting them back together. Sometimes I have bits left over, though. And I stole Deadpool's car for a roadtrip last year and we kinda totaled it but that wasn't my fault. Okay, it kinda was. But right up until that, all the upgrades were seriously sweet."

John made a note to never let Rikku near any real car he valued. "It helps, sometimes," he said evenly, "to know how to put things together the way they're supposed to go before you start... improvising."

"It totally would," Rikku nodded. "We don't have a lot of that, where I'm from. Uh. Manuals and stuff, explaining it? Most of that's gone, so we just make it up and see what works. You get lots of weird explosions like that."

"I'm Jo, sophomore going on junior, and I've picked up a bit here and there from hunters repairing their cars at my mom's roadhouse, but I'd like to bone up on anything they might have skipped."

"Speaking as someone who has seen a lot of those cars," John said dryly, "they skip a lot."

"Uh, hey," Cal gave the room a shy smile, hands shoved in his pockets as he introduced himself. "I'm Cal Stephanides. I'm sixteen, and, uh, I don't really have a lot of experience in fixing cars, and that's why I'm taking the class. 'Cause I'd like to. My dad was really into them, so..."

That, and basic auto mechanics was a manly sort of thing to know. But Cal wasn't exactly about to just say, yeah, hi, I'm Cal and I'm insecure in my manhood for very good reasons, so I'm taking this class to overcompensate.

Especially because there were actually...a lot of girls in this class, he was noticing.

"We're going to start with the very basics," John told him. "So it doesn't matter if you don't have much experience."

"Good to know," Cal commented a bit wryly.

"Yo," Kevin said as he jutted out his chin. "I'm Kevin. I'm like eighteen. I've always thought cars were cool, like working on motors, working with my hands, stuff like that." He shrugged and leaned back against the wall.

As first impressions went, John probably wasn't as impressed as he could have been, but he didn't let any of that show on his face. "Well, we'll be doing a lot of 'stuff like that' here."

"Cool," Kevin replied. He could tell he was going to really like this guy.

"I'm Kaylee," she said, smiling and waving a little. "I'm sixteen, and I don't know much of anything 'bout cars, really, but I know ships and transports and...really, anything with an engine inside and out. Been playin' with them since I was big 'nough to crawl. So I'm really here to learn 'bout what it is y'all use here, and how to fix it."

That was an attitude that John could understand and definitely approved of. Couple that with what Zoe had told him of her Kaylee and he was predisposed to like the young woman. "We'll do our best to get you up to speed on Earth vehicles," he told her with a warm smile.

"I'm Lucas Scott, senior now. I grew up working in my uncle's garage back in Tree Hill, so I'd like to think I know my way around a car."

John smiled at him. "This then should seem very familiar to you."

"I'm Dick Grayson, and I'm a junior," Dick said. "My guardian is a bit of a car nut, so I've picked up a decent amount. I'd like to get a better foundation for what I already know, though."

"Hey. I'm Jack Burton, seventeen, and I think I'm a junior. Not sure what with this summer thing. I've wored on cars a bit, helped my dad on his rig, and I'm going to own my own some day so I need to know how they all work." He sat back in the chair. Tools! Cars! That grin could power a small town.

when he pings in. Ask him about how to get your carbeurator to shoot out sweettarts!

[am at work so pings will be very very slow till about 2 Pacific.]

He'll be lingering after class for anyone who wants a word.
