Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part I

The weather was lovely thanks to the island's new location, and even though it had been less than a week, there was no sign anywhere on the school lawn that part of the land had sunk and collapsed during graduation.

That didn't stop everyone from setting things up away from where the graduates had been seated, of course.

There were tables and chairs and plenty of food and drinks, along with nametags, and three signs: one listing the Big Sibling/Little Sibling pairings, one listing rooms and roommates for the new students, and one listing the cabin assignments.

[WAIT FOR THE OCD PLEASE. OCD IS UP. This is part one of the picnic, specifically for meeting siblings, roommates, and teachers. The rest of the picnic is happening here and here, in an effort to keep browsers from breaking for as long as possible.]

Peter thought about it.

"I'm going to go out on a limb and say you're not going to be thrown by stuff like aliens or gremlins," Peter said.

"I Have Been To This Island Before. I Used To Work At The Post Office With Mr Lipwig Before We returned To Ankh-Morpork, So I Have Seen Both Of Those." She paused. "If A Gremlin Bit Me I Think It Would Be Very Unhappy."

"So you're an old hand at this," Peter said. He looked Gladys over. "Yeah, I think that'd have to be a brave gremlin to even try."

The glow brightened. "Yes, It Would. I Am Familiar With The Island But No Golem Has Ever Gone To School. No Golem Has Ever Been A Student. I Am The First."

"That's seriously impressive," Peter said, and meant it. "What are you hoping to learn?"

The glow dimmed completely and Gladys went very still, like a machine that's been turned off. It was a complicated question and golems had no real understanding of hope. After a bit, the glow returned. "Everything. Knowledge Is Freedom And I Am A Free Golem. Therefore I Should Learn As Much As There Is To Learn."

"I can't argue with that," Peter said. "So how did you get free? Sounds like most golems aren't."

"The Golem Trust Bought Me From My Owner And Put The Receipt In My Head And Now I Own Myself. Golems Must Work, Must Have A Master Until They Are Free. Then We Work To Buy Other Golems And Once They Are Free They Work To Buy More Golems."

"How much does a golem usually cost?" Peter asked.

"A Golem Is Worth One Hundred Gold Pieces," she intoned. "I Cost One Hundred And Twenty Gold Pieces Because My Owner Did Not Want To Sell Me."

"Any idea what that is in American dollars?" Peter asked.

The glow dimmed slightly. "No."

"That's okay," Peter assured her. "I don't either. So do you have family or friends that you're waiting to get free?"

"Golems Do Not Have Friends Or Family. We Are Made From Clay and Words Are Put In Our Head And Then We Work. I Give My Money To The Golem Trust And They Will Use It To Free The Next Golem," she replied. "It Is How Things Are Done. There Has Not Been A New Golem For Hundreds Of Years So Eventually All Golems Will Be Free Golems."

"So you're planning on working while you go to school?" Peter asked.

"Yes. I Must Find A Job. Plus It Is An Important Part Of Being A Student." Or so she'd read. "I Will Find One That Will Help Me Enrich The Experience Of Being At School And Will Not Interfere With My Classes."

"You've got plenty of options there," Peter said. "There's the bookstore, the magic shop, that art gallery that recently opened. I think you'll have no problem finding something to fit the bill."

Gladys' eyes glowed with satisfaction. "Already You Give Me Good Advice. You Are A Good Big Sibling."

Peter smiled. "That works out since you're giving me good feedback. This way I'll know if I'm doing my job right."
