Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part I

The weather was lovely thanks to the island's new location, and even though it had been less than a week, there was no sign anywhere on the school lawn that part of the land had sunk and collapsed during graduation.

That didn't stop everyone from setting things up away from where the graduates had been seated, of course.

There were tables and chairs and plenty of food and drinks, along with nametags, and three signs: one listing the Big Sibling/Little Sibling pairings, one listing rooms and roommates for the new students, and one listing the cabin assignments.

[WAIT FOR THE OCD PLEASE. OCD IS UP. This is part one of the picnic, specifically for meeting siblings, roommates, and teachers. The rest of the picnic is happening here and here, in an effort to keep browsers from breaking for as long as possible.]

"A what, please?" Alice asked, clasping her hands behind her back. She hadn't quite discovered yet that she'd traveled a good stretch out of her own timeline. "Muffins sounds very nice. Dinah belonged to the family, in name at least, but she was always mine."

"Oh, um. A--" If she could handle somehow ending up in Greece, she could handle American to English translation, right? "A lift?"

Alice was, at times, astonishingly literal-minded. A lift! Something to lift them up to the fifth floor. Brilliant idea.

"That sounds rather grand," she said. "If I see a sign of one, I'll be sure to let you know. Otherwise I fear it's the stairs for us."

Francine groaned. "I knew I shouldn't have let my mom talk me into that fourth suitcase."

She laughed, not unkindly, at that. "Let me help," she said. "I've ... not got much with me, I don't mind."

Francine might have noticed the small, battered suitcase by Alice's feet. It was the only thing she'd brought, and it had mostly been filled with her cat.

"Oh, thanks!" Francine smiled widely, for at least once today a genuine smile instead of a nervous defense mechanism. "At least they've got wheels; that'll get us as far as the stairs."

"Should we go now?" Alice asked, reaching a hand to take one of Francine's bags. "Or is that rude, to leave the picnic? I'd hope to return, there are so many interesting people to meet. And the food is marvelous."

The asylum had served gray, unidentifiable mush. Alice was in heaven.

If Francine were, well, Dinah, her ears would actually have perked up. "Food?"

"The food here," and here, Alice stopped in reaching for Francine's suitcases, because this overruled suitcases, "is incredible. Little pastry puffs and cheese danishes and fruits and all sorts of things. I made a plate up for Dinah and I'm afraid I took rather a lot and I shall be making another trip soon. And that's not my second, I'm afraid."

Alice had the somewhat underfed appearance of someone who had -- well. Spent a few years catatonic, and all that. She was going to be rid of that as quickly as possible.

"I'm supposed to be on a diet." Francine did not have the somewhat underfed appearance of...anything underfed. "But... cheese danishes?"

"A diet?" Alice raised an eyebrow. "That sounds terribly depressing. The cheese danishes were fluffy and broke apart in my mouth. And there were little pastry puffs with meat of some kind in them and I swear to you they're going to have someone manning the buffet soon and lecturing. 'Alice, you've had plenty, no more.'"

Alice was possibly not a good diet-buddy.

"...Picnic food totally doesn't count," Francine decided.

[identity profile] notyourpawn.livejournal.com 2008-05-10 03:12 am (UTC)(link)
"Doesn't count in the least," Alice agreed. "We should grab a plate before we brave the fifth floor, lift-less."

"Five floors, no lift... maybe two plates."

Alice laughed. "We can stack them so they're easier to carry. We'll need our energy for the stairs, after all."
