Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part I

The weather was lovely thanks to the island's new location, and even though it had been less than a week, there was no sign anywhere on the school lawn that part of the land had sunk and collapsed during graduation.

That didn't stop everyone from setting things up away from where the graduates had been seated, of course.

There were tables and chairs and plenty of food and drinks, along with nametags, and three signs: one listing the Big Sibling/Little Sibling pairings, one listing rooms and roommates for the new students, and one listing the cabin assignments.

[~~WAIT FOR THE OCD PLEASE.~~ OCD IS UP. This is part one of the picnic, specifically for meeting siblings, roommates, and teachers. The rest of the picnic is happening here and here, in an effort to keep browsers from breaking for as long as possible.]

"Good to meet you too. So," Murdock stuffed his hands in his pockets and rocked a bit on his heels. "What do you teach here at Fandom, Steve? Or...do you prefer Mr. Rogers?" What? It's a perfectly innocent question.

"Well, we're both adults here," Steve reasoned, "so Steve is fine. I teach art during the school year, arts and crafts or whatever else seems interesting during the summer. And yourself?"

"Art, eh? That's cool. I was an artist once. But only briefly. My main thing is flyin'." He grinned widly. "I'm teaching Flight and Flying this summer. Then I'll be teaching something else flight-related during the rest of the year. Probably somethin' along the lines of what makes flight possible."

"I know there are several students interested in flight here," Steve said, "so that should be good. The students here come from...a wide variety of backgrounds, though, you might want to be prepared for some of them to be expecting different types of flight from whatever you're used to."

He nodded. "So I heard. About the different places thing. I visited the island a while back. Got to chat with a few folks who seemed to know what they were talkin' about. 'Sides," he grinned, "I can fly anything."

Uh-huh. "Spaceships?"

"Well...I did meet one 'lil gal that kinda mentioned 'em to me, but I'll admit that I don't have a lot of experience with 'em. 'Cept for that one time I thought I was in a spaceship." He frowned a little, "I *think* it actually happened, but I can't tell for certain. And nobody believes me half the time anyway."

His grin came back quickly. "Besides, I can always be learnin' them. I'm a quick study."

This...did not bode well. At least they were just simulators, Steve thought. "Well, I'm not much--" any "--good with technology, but if you need any help, I can help find someone who knows more."

"Thanks, man! I'm more of a mechanical guy myself. Some of this fancy technologicy stuff I jus' don't get. I might have to take you up on that offer later on. After a get a chance to get settled in and all."

He glanced across the school grounds briefly. "Rekon I'll be needin' to find a place to stay too," he remarked absently.

"There might be a room available at the house I live at," Steve suggested. "33 Apocalypse? You'll have to talk to Melody or probably the new guy, though. Or you could try the apartment building, but last I heard they were pretty full."

Murdock nodded. "Thanks. I'll have to look into those."
