Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part I

The weather was lovely thanks to the island's new location, and even though it had been less than a week, there was no sign anywhere on the school lawn that part of the land had sunk and collapsed during graduation.

That didn't stop everyone from setting things up away from where the graduates had been seated, of course.

There were tables and chairs and plenty of food and drinks, along with nametags, and three signs: one listing the Big Sibling/Little Sibling pairings, one listing rooms and roommates for the new students, and one listing the cabin assignments.

[WAIT FOR THE OCD PLEASE. OCD IS UP. This is part one of the picnic, specifically for meeting siblings, roommates, and teachers. The rest of the picnic is happening here and here, in an effort to keep browsers from breaking for as long as possible.]

Harriet lifted her chin, glaring at him now. "And ensure that no one interferes with their well being or places them in harm's way." The corner of her mouth lifted in something that was in no way a smile. "No matter how well meaning they might hold themselves out to be."

It took him a few moments to realise that she was referring to him. "Same old Harriet Jones." He scratched his ear. "Different location, I'll give you that, but still in charge. Tell me, Dean Jones, do you teach your students to shoot a man in the back when they're walking away?"

"I teach them whatever they need to know." She hadn't realised she was going to move until she was right in front of him. "My students, Doctor. Mine. Not your playthings, not the unwitting recipients of your fickle goodwill, as you flit in from on high to grace them with your presence. Teach them, if that's what you're here to do, but they're mine. My responsibility, and--" In the back of her head was the thought that Kerrigan would be proud of her right now. It and her grief spurred her on. "You know exactly what I'm capable of doing to meet my responsibilities."

His expression turned sombre. "That's what worries me." Like he could talk. A lot had happened since their last encounter. The Doctor had seen and done things to shape his point of view a lot differently from when the invasion had occurred and Harriet Jones had ordered the destruction of a retreating fleet. "I could do it again, you know. Six small words. Why shouldn't I?"

She snorted and turned her back on him in deliberate and obvious contempt. "No, Doctor. You couldn't."

"I can do a lot of things," he called after her. "And you didn't answer my question!"

"I know." Harriet paused, but she didn't turn. "You're going to do whatever blasted thing you want," she shot back, starting to walk away. "So what would be the point?"

The Doctor watched her go, his hands back in his pockets. He did do whatever blasted thing he wanted. Sometimes that wasn't always a good thing. He still firmly believed that destroying that fleet after they were retreating was absolutely the wrong thing to do. Now, however, he realised that those six small words had not only destroyed Harriet Jones' career, it had removed her from office and given 'Harold Saxon' the opening he'd needed to rise to power.

He'd settle for watching her. No needlessly rash actions.

The Doctor turned and walked towards the food table. He wouldn't be responsible for bringing this island to ruins as well.
