Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part I

The weather was lovely thanks to the island's new location, and even though it had been less than a week, there was no sign anywhere on the school lawn that part of the land had sunk and collapsed during graduation.

That didn't stop everyone from setting things up away from where the graduates had been seated, of course.

There were tables and chairs and plenty of food and drinks, along with nametags, and three signs: one listing the Big Sibling/Little Sibling pairings, one listing rooms and roommates for the new students, and one listing the cabin assignments.

[WAIT FOR THE OCD PLEASE. OCD IS UP. This is part one of the picnic, specifically for meeting siblings, roommates, and teachers. The rest of the picnic is happening here and here, in an effort to keep browsers from breaking for as long as possible.]

Jen laughed lightly, and yeah, she was pretty impressed that there hadn't been flailing. "Thanks. But yeah, there are people from the past here, too, and from different planets. Or different worlds. You can't always tell."

Ned would have a private little freakout about the whole people from space and time and the past and future later where no one could see.

"How?" Ned managed to ask. "I thought that was for books and movies my mother never let me watch because I'd have nightmares."

"I'm not sure," Jen admitted. "At least, according to the technology in my world it sort of exists in a weird pocket in space-time, or something like that. I'm also not sure how the island ended up off the coast of Greece instead of Virginia, but that's Fandom for you. Asking how's more confusing than just going with it."

"Yeah, forget I asked," Ned said quickly, nodding his agreement with that last statement. "I'll end up chocking it up to going slowly insane and this just being the next step on my journey. Greece? We're in Greece?"

"You're not insane --" she hoped. "It's just Fandom. Which is normally off the coast of Virginia, except after graduation last weekend we suddenly weren't."

"The island grew legs and walked away?" Ned asked, not really serious at all. The poor boy.

"Actually," Jen said thoughtfully, "I wouldn't discount that as a possibility."

"I am never going to sleep tonight," he muttered and ran a hand through his hair. "I live on an island that might have legs now. I hope he has good arch support. Wouldn't want us to fall over mid move."

Jen giggled at that. She couldn't help it, okay?

"It'll be okay, really," she tried to assure Ned. "You get used to the weird things soon enough. But I guess that's what I'm here for, to help you out with that stuff."

"In 969 years, when you're born, I'm going to be really old," he said, squinting at her. "I'll be the little elderly brother then."

Jen grimaced slightly, but quickly tried to hide it. "Yeah, you will be. Time travel is a headache, isn't it?"

"I think it will be tonight when I let myself think about it," Ned said honestly. "Right now, everything is kind of just a blur of words and images and me trying really hard not to scream. I'm doing pretty well."

"You're doing really, really well, actually," Jen said, deciding not to mention giant bears or angel statues or anything like that yet. She wasn't sure she'd be able to handle it if he did scream. "Do you have your roommate assignments and stuff yet?"

[identity profile] death-and-pies.livejournal.com 2008-05-09 06:39 pm (UTC)(link)
"Yeah," Ned said with a nod. "I'm down on the second floor with someone named Dick Grayson. We haven't met yet. I really hope he's not a unicorn or something."

[identity profile] time-flyer-5.livejournal.com 2008-05-09 06:44 pm (UTC)(link)
"I think if he was, you'd be living in the stables on the first floor," Jen replied. Not that this ruled out the possibility of this Dick Grayson kid having purple skin or being able to fly or anything like that, but she was reasonably sure the unicorn thing was right out.

"It's weird that I'm relieved I'm not living with a unicorn," Ned said, shaking his head. "That's what counts for relief here."

He really had no idea, but best not to scare the newbies away on their first day, probably. "Relax," Jen said. "It'll be fine."

[identity profile] death-and-pies.livejournal.com 2008-05-09 07:28 pm (UTC)(link)
"Relax," Ned repeated, taking a breath. "I'm all right. Most of the initial urge to run away and go live in the mountains has died. It's been replaced by my plan to hide in the closet. Not really."

Re: Meet Your Big/Little Sibling (Summer 2008)

[identity profile] time-flyer-5.livejournal.com 2008-05-09 08:55 pm (UTC)(link)
"Well," Jen pointed out, "it's not like there are really any mountains around here."

Beat.

"At the moment."

[identity profile] death-and-pies.livejournal.com 2008-05-09 09:01 pm (UTC)(link)
"I've always wanted to be a hermit who lived in the mountains," Ned said dryly. "Grow a beard and eat moss."

[identity profile] time-flyer-5.livejournal.com 2008-05-09 09:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Ew. "Well, who knows? You could get your chance," Jen said. "We could suddenly just get a mountain range on the coast or something. The one question you never want to ask around here when random weird stuff happens is 'But why?'"

[identity profile] death-and-pies.livejournal.com 2008-05-09 09:47 pm (UTC)(link)
"Got it," Ned said and tapped the side of his head. "Safer for the brain if I don't know."
