Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part I

The weather was lovely thanks to the island's new location, and even though it had been less than a week, there was no sign anywhere on the school lawn that part of the land had sunk and collapsed during graduation.

That didn't stop everyone from setting things up away from where the graduates had been seated, of course.

There were tables and chairs and plenty of food and drinks, along with nametags, and three signs: one listing the Big Sibling/Little Sibling pairings, one listing rooms and roommates for the new students, and one listing the cabin assignments.

[WAIT FOR THE OCD PLEASE. OCD IS UP. This is part one of the picnic, specifically for meeting siblings, roommates, and teachers. The rest of the picnic is happening here and here, in an effort to keep browsers from breaking for as long as possible.]

"Kaylee's a nickname too!" she chirped. "I mean, kinda, 'cause my real name's real long to say all the time. So where're you from?"

She was expecting somewhere in the Core, the way this girl spoke and carried herself. Very professional-like.

Turtle's nose wrinkled distastefully. "Wisconsin," she muttered, like it was some bad disease. "Totally boring and lame. What about you?"

"Beylix," she told her, adopting the same sort of air about her own planet. Because Beylix really was kind of the ass-end of nowhere. "Where's Wisconsin?"

"It's in the United States," Turtle said with a nod, "which is where this island here usually is, although its in a different, better part of the United States. The only thing cool about Wisconsin is the cheese and that it's by Lake Michigan. I've never heard of Beylix, so I'm going to take a wild guess because you don't sound foreign, really, that you're not from Earth Proper. Which is okay. There's a lot of people not from Earth, but are practically like they are from Earth, like Anders and Isabel and Teddy and maybe possibly Marco, but we're still not sure on him. It might sound a little weird, but when I tell you that everyone in Fandom comes from lots of different places? They really do mean LOTS of different places."

Kaylee kind of tilted her head, and said, "I'm from the new galaxy? 'Cause I was real surprised when I heard this school was gonna be on Earth-that-was, since, uh, we had to move off it 'cause we used it up. But it don't look used up. So yeah, I'm not from Earth. I didn't know people still really lived here. Or that it was so, y'know, inhabitable."

"Well," Turtle considered all this information carefully, "you could just be from the future, too, because that happens a lot as well. Or a possible future, which I kind of hope, because it's kind of a nice planet. It seems a shame that we'd go and waste it all up, you know?"

Kaylee considered this information, and replied, "Is the year 2513?"

Turtle shook her head. "Nope. 2008. Definitely a future girl."

She gave Kaylee a small smile at that. It would be kind of neat having a future girl for a little sibling.

"Don't worry, though. I'm from 2008 already, so you've got an in on how things work. I've also been here for a while, so I know a thing or two about the ins and outs. Fandom can either be really hard to get used to or you just accept that it's weird and have fun with it."

Kaylee nodded, digesting that. She didn't know time travel was possible, but, she decided, "Shiny. So this is what it was like before. Huh. It ain't so different at home, really," she added, almost conspiratorially. "Not as far as I'm lookin' right now, anyway."

[identity profile] stocksgrrl.livejournal.com 2008-05-09 04:15 pm (UTC)(link)
"Well that just means," Turtle grinned a little as she picked up on Kaylee's tone, "you'll have to check the place out and see what else might be different. Although, I should mention that right now? The island isn't where it usually is." She started to gesture, to help Kaylee follow along better, and wishing she had a chart. "See, usually, the island is off the coast of a state called Virginia. But something happened at graduation last week, I don't know what, it's probably confusing, though, and the island started moving, so now we're off the coast of a country called Greece. You following so far?"

[identity profile] weefeetbigboots.livejournal.com 2008-05-09 04:17 pm (UTC)(link)
Kaylee nodded, trying to picture that in her head. "So it moves 'round? Is it runnin' on an engine, or like a boat, where it kinda just floats?"

Re: Meet Your Big/Little Sibling (Summer 2008)

[identity profile] stocksgrrl.livejournal.com 2008-05-09 04:28 pm (UTC)(link)
"I have no idea," Turtle admitted, shaking her head slightly. "It only just started doing it; it was stationary for all I knew up until last week. Could be an engine. Could be just floating. Could even be on the back of a giant turtle, like in some of the old myths and stories, but I think I just like that theory because...well...obviously."

[identity profile] weefeetbigboots.livejournal.com 2008-05-09 04:33 pm (UTC)(link)
"Oooooh!" Kaylee's eyes went wide. "But what if the turtle went diving under water, like deep. Wouldn't we sink or somethin'?"

Re: Meet Your Big/Little Sibling (Summer 2008)

[identity profile] stocksgrrl.livejournal.com 2008-05-09 04:41 pm (UTC)(link)
Turtle's eyes widened. "...Then let's hope the turtle really likes the sunshine."

[identity profile] weefeetbigboots.livejournal.com 2008-05-09 04:46 pm (UTC)(link)
"Maybe it's a -- what're the ones like turtles but they're different?" Kaylee said thoughtfully. "Maybe it's one of those and it can swim but not go all that far under water!"

Kaylee was a bit too wrapped up in this theory.

Re: Meet Your Big/Little Sibling (Summer 2008)

[identity profile] stocksgrrl.livejournal.com 2008-05-09 04:53 pm (UTC)(link)
Turtle's head bobbed in a nod, definitely liking where Kaylee was taking the theory. "It's one of those," she said with the utmost conviction. "Definitely. I'm sure of it. I mean, there are a lot of different turtles in the world. If there's anything I've learned here, it's that."

Pause.

"Well, okay, I've actually learned tons of stuff here, but that is definitely on the list."

Re: Meet Your Big/Little Sibling (Summer 2008)

[identity profile] weefeetbigboots.livejournal.com 2008-05-09 05:01 pm (UTC)(link)
"It sounds useful, though!" Kaylee offered. "'cause of your name, 'specially. I'd want to learn that there are a lot of different Kaylees in the world."

Re: Meet Your Big/Little Sibling (Summer 2008)

[identity profile] stocksgrrl.livejournal.com 2008-05-09 05:12 pm (UTC)(link)
"At least," Turtle pointed out, "I don't think there's a kaylee animal. This actually helps, you know. Sometimes, people around here will turn into things. Just randomly. There's no way explaining it, it just happens. One day, you wake up, and, ta-dah! You're something else."

Here, Turtle sighed heavily.

"So, needless to say, I get turned into an actual turtle every so often. It's annoying, but it's just something you gotta deal with."

Re: Meet Your Big/Little Sibling (Summer 2008)

[identity profile] weefeetbigboots.livejournal.com 2008-05-09 05:16 pm (UTC)(link)
Kaylee frowned. "So it's the island doin' that, and not just, y'know, a gift of yours?"

It was possible. She'd heard stories of Readers and such, even if she didn't really believe them; wouldn't be too strange to meet a shapeshifter.

Re: Meet Your Big/Little Sibling (Summer 2008)

[identity profile] stocksgrrl.livejournal.com 2008-05-09 05:21 pm (UTC)(link)
"Definitely not a gift of mine," Turtle agreed, head bobbing. "Only gift I really have is offering great products at discount prices, playing the market, and being able to argue my way out of practically anything. I even took a class about magic, because I wanted to be a witch when I was younger, and...yeah. I got nothing. Some people around here do, though."

Her eyes went huge. "Really?"

Re: Meet Your Big/Little Sibling (Summer 2008)

[identity profile] stocksgrrl.livejournal.com 2008-05-09 05:31 pm (UTC)(link)
"Really really," Turtle said, nodding her head firmly. "One of my best friend can turn into animals, and then another one of my friends makes duplicates of himself. And then a lot of people are things like ninjas and warriors, even, too. We have everything in Fandom. It's crazy. But awesome."

Re: Meet Your Big/Little Sibling (Summer 2008)

[identity profile] weefeetbigboots.livejournal.com 2008-05-09 05:54 pm (UTC)(link)
"Shiny," Kaylee decided, grinning hugely. "And it's all real? It's not just stories?"

Re: Meet Your Big/Little Sibling (Summer 2008)

[identity profile] stocksgrrl.livejournal.com 2008-05-09 06:01 pm (UTC)(link)
"Definitely real," Turtle nodded, smiling back and feeling like a very good big sister right now. "Not just stories. Oh! And watch out for gremlins."

Because you had to say that, and Turtle was worried she might forget.

[identity profile] weefeetbigboots.livejournal.com 2008-05-09 06:07 pm (UTC)(link)
"What's a gremlin?" Kaylee wondered, frowning.
