Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part I

The weather was lovely thanks to the island's new location, and even though it had been less than a week, there was no sign anywhere on the school lawn that part of the land had sunk and collapsed during graduation.

That didn't stop everyone from setting things up away from where the graduates had been seated, of course.

There were tables and chairs and plenty of food and drinks, along with nametags, and three signs: one listing the Big Sibling/Little Sibling pairings, one listing rooms and roommates for the new students, and one listing the cabin assignments.

"Five?" Turtle twisted her face a little. "Ew. I don't know if I could do that. I mean, here, it was nice having a roommate only because that meant we got bigger rooms. My room back home was actually a closet, don't listen to what my mother says that it wasn't, because it was. Is, um..." Turtle looked back toward the list briefly to make sure she had the name right, "Frell. Is that where your finishing school was? I've never heard of Frell before."

Ella made a face. "One of them was my ...I guess my stepsister, now, and she's just obnoxious. But some of the others were nice."

"Frell's my city," she explained. "The finishing school is in Jenn. It was a three-day trip." She glanced around, taking in the unfamiliar landscape. "I'd never heard of Virginia."

Ella's clothes did have Turtle guessing that maybe that was the case. Still, Ella seemed nice so far, and she certainly wasn't all blonde and buxom and leggy like Kara had been, so Turtle was feeling pretty okay about this so far.

"Then you've probably never heard of Wisconsin, either," she guessed. "That's where I'm from. But that's okay. You get a lot of people from a lot of different places here. A lot of different places."

Ella shook her head. "I haven't been outside Kyrria before," she said regretfully, then realized that this girl from Wisconsin, wherever that was, probably hadn't heard of Kyrria, either. "...which is my country."

The idea of people from different places was intriguing, though. So many languages to learn! "Is there anyone from Ayortha?"

"They...could be?" Turtle responded with an uncertain look. "I don't know. I've never heard of it before, but there are a lot of people here, so I wouldn't rule it out. I do try to keep up with that sort of thing, though. I own half of the second most successful business on the island, you know, and we're a general store, so it's important to know where people are coming from, to know what they want. You should come see it sometime. We sell everything!"

"Ayortha's next to Kyrria. I have a friend in their court now, actually," Ella shrugged. She was hoping Charmont's promised letters would find her in this strange place.

"But that must be exciting, having your own business. I will be certain to stop in -- I spent ever so many hours in the marketplace at home." She gave a mischievous smile. "Do you sell parrots? Those were my favorite."

Turtle's mouth gaped open a little, her eyes wide.

"We...don't, actually," she realized, devastation tinging her voice. "But we will! I'll order some tomorrow, since I'm working tomorrow."

Ella bounced. "They're fantastic! I learned so many languages from them, back at home. Their keeper had taught them Gnomic and Elfian and just everything."

She added, speculatively, "I don't suppose I could get one as a pet..." Turtle got a say, after all.

"You learned languages from parrots? Really? That's so cool! And...I...if you wanted to, sure, I think I might be okay with a parrot in the room. I mean, I'd have to check with Jeff first, he might be allergic. But then it could totally work out so that I have a really good excuse for his evil, evil dog to never come near the room again. Nana won't be allowed in if we've got a parrot, she'd try to eat it!"

"I learned the pronunciations from them, but then I had to talk to their keeper to find out what I was saying," Ella admitted. "I'm not the best at them all, but it's just fun."

She smiled. "If it's okay with Jeff," who she was guessing was the boyfriend "having a parrot to keep an evil dog away sounds like an excellent bargain. Can Nana really be that bad, though?"

Turtle's eyes darkened as they narrowed, arms crossing over her chest.

"Yes."

That was much more reaction than Ella had expected. "Oh."

"I think I'm afraid of her, now."

"She eats things, like pants," Turtle informed Ella. "And she breaks floors and she makes Jeff go on these really weird adventures in closets. Jeff always told me she was evil, at first, but I didn't believe him, because he always said it was because she was a spy his mother sent. I still don't think she's a spy, but, believe me, she's definitely evil."

"Maybe she's under a spell that makes her evil," Ella suggested, because all of that sounded nothing like any dog she had ever known. "Oooh, or maybe she's part ogre."

Turtle's eyes widened a little. "She is big enough to be part ogre," she realized. "And I think we thought about the curse possibility before, but I think that just ended up being a whole thing that she's evil by proxy, since it was Jeff's mother who sent her."

"...and Jeff's mother is evil," Ella guessed. "It could happen. My stepmother just might be. I'm pretty sure her daughters are, they're certainly greedy and stupid enough. You have no idea how glad I am my father agreed to send me to school."

"I think it might just be a thing with mothers," Turtle said, agreeably nodding. "Mine was evil, too. And if you're gonna get sent to a school, trust me, Fandom's a good one."

"My own mother wasn't evil, but the rest of them ..." Ella shook her head. "I look forward to exploring, anyhow. Oh, is there anything more about the room I should know before I officially move in?"

Turtle considered the question carefully. Really, room 210 was pretty normal, especially compared to some, so she shrugged.

"Not really? I keep a lot of file boxes in the closet, so I hope you don't mind that. And, um...well..."

She took in a deep breath; it was awkward having to ask a new roommate this, so it came out in one long gush.

"Howdoyoufeelaboutovernightvisitorsofthemalepersuasion, bychance?"

"I don't have a lot of possessions, so as long as there's some room I should be fine." She considered the question about overnight guests; it hadn't exactly been an issue in Kyrria, or at least not one she'd had to deal with.

"I don't think I have a problem with it?" she said. "As long as he's not terribly rude or noisy, I mean. But it's really no different from how I'd feel about a female overnight guest." Not exactly the same, but close enough.

"Oh, well, he's not...he's not intentionally rude, or noisy, but..." Turtle took in a breath. "He's Jeff. That's really all I can say. You'll just have to meet him, and you'll see what I mean, but I promise. He's absolutely harmless. He's just...excitable."

Ella's eyebrows were leaping up toward her hairline. "I see ..." she said slowly, not sure she did, but knowing that, per Turtle's words she would after she met him. "Well, if he makes me uncomfortable I'll let you know? But it shouldn't be a problem. I like most people, honestly."

Turtle nodded, although a bit worriedly. She was having the feeling that Jeff was definitely going to make a nice girl like Ella uncomfortable. Although, on the other hand, maybe it could still be okay. Ella was nice and didn't have, like, giant boobs or short skirts, and was actually much more like Turtle herself, so it could go well.

"...We'll work it out," she concluded, with conviction.

"Absolutely we will," Ella said, with matching conviction. Not because it was an order; it didn't seem to count as one. But because she liked Turtle so far, and if they were going to share a room, they would have to.

"Good," Turtle nodded again. She wondered what Ella's thoughts on contracts might be, but decided not to push it. Not until she got to know Ella a little better.

"Have you met your big sibling and all of that? I know it's their jobs to make sure that you kind of feel comfortable and all that, but as your roommate, I'll be more than happy to help. If you have any questions or anything, just let me know."
