Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part I

The weather was lovely thanks to the island's new location, and even though it had been less than a week, there was no sign anywhere on the school lawn that part of the land had sunk and collapsed during graduation.

That didn't stop everyone from setting things up away from where the graduates had been seated, of course.

There were tables and chairs and plenty of food and drinks, along with nametags, and three signs: one listing the Big Sibling/Little Sibling pairings, one listing rooms and roommates for the new students, and one listing the cabin assignments.

[WAIT FOR THE OCD PLEASE. OCD IS UP. This is part one of the picnic, specifically for meeting siblings, roommates, and teachers. The rest of the picnic is happening here and here, in an effort to keep browsers from breaking for as long as possible.]

Fraser couldn't help but notice the familiarity of one particular person. He couldn't quite place him but that didn't stop him from trying as he walked over.

"Hello," he greeted pleasantly. "Welcome to the island."

Tyler was momentarily startled as he recognized the man who greeted him; he hadn't quite registered how very familiar some of those in the crowd looked, since last time he checked it was 2018.

The Mountie, right. Whose name was ...

He was drawing a blank.

Well, everyone looked older when you were a kid, right? And all that cold air in Canada probably preserved him. So it wasn't such a surprise he hadn't aged much.

"Hey," he returned. "It's good to be back. I'm Tyler."

"Back?" Fraser asked, now quite certain he was right about the familiarity. "Were you a teacher previously?"

"Student," Tyler said, shaking his head. "I spent sophomore year here. Would have been class of 2009 if I hadn't found other uses for my time." Or gotten kicked out, but they were one and the same. "I think you were around back then too."

"I've been around for awhile," Fraser said, frowning once before shaking his head. "Forgive me, I'm still not used to the way time can and does work around here. I'm still Constable Benton Fraser and welcome back to the island. I'm pleased to hear students are returning to teach."

Tyler had gotten stuck on one thing Fraser had said. "You lost me," he said. "What do you mean, 'the way time can and does work here'?"

He remembered time travel, all right. But he believed a lot of things when he was 15, and he thought that adding a few sci-f touches to what was no doubt a normal boarding school was the least of what his brain had done.

"Well, considering how much older you are now," Fraser said, nodding at him, "and that the last time I saw you was maybe...a year or so, give or take a few months, I can safely say that time moves differently when people leave this place. I forget that sometimes."

"Right, to me I left 11 years ago," Tyler said. "it's weird, for years and years I'd look for the school online and get nothing? Then this spring it was there again."

"I guess you guys caught up to me." Despite his mild tone, he was astounded by this.

"It looks like we did," Fraser said, smiling. "I'm sure you'll find that nothing much has changed save for a few things here and there. And the fact that you are, indeed, faculty now."

"Which probably means no cabin wars," Tyler noted. "But also, no detentions. So, trade off."

"Seriously, I'm glad you guys trusted me to come back."

"Principal Washburn deserves the thanks," Fraser told him, nodding. "She makes the final decisions. If she trusted you, there's a reason."

"It was Zoe's call?" Tyler was surprised. "I need to hunt her down and give her flowers. This job offer came at exactly the right time."

"Hey, did she have her baby?" Obviously she did, if it had been over a year, but after a time warp all things were possible.

"She did," Fraser said, nodding. "A little girl who looks just like her. Very adorable. She was born a little under a year ago, I believe. Or possibly over a year. I tend to lose track of time."

"I do that too," Tyler agreed. "Sometimes things just sort of blur together."

"She should be around here if you'd like to say hello," Fraser told him. "She doesn't tend to skip the picnics. Even when there are a lot of people here this time."

Which wasn't different from last time but Fraser felt it needed to be said each time.

Spotting Zoe, Tyler nodded. "I think I'll do that. Good catching up with you, Constable Fraser."

He couldn't call him Benton, somehow.
