Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part I

The weather was lovely thanks to the island's new location, and even though it had been less than a week, there was no sign anywhere on the school lawn that part of the land had sunk and collapsed during graduation.

That didn't stop everyone from setting things up away from where the graduates had been seated, of course.

There were tables and chairs and plenty of food and drinks, along with nametags, and three signs: one listing the Big Sibling/Little Sibling pairings, one listing rooms and roommates for the new students, and one listing the cabin assignments.

[WAIT FOR THE OCD PLEASE. OCD IS UP. This is part one of the picnic, specifically for meeting siblings, roommates, and teachers. The rest of the picnic is happening here and here, in an effort to keep browsers from breaking for as long as possible.]

Fraser arrived to the picnic early, walking slowly around the area, memorizing faces and making sure nothing go too out of hand.

The best place to start when asking questions usually wasn't someone in uniform (they had a tendency to shoot things), but this wasn't any uniform. This was a Mountie uniform. The Doctor was thrilled to meet a genuine Mountie. "Hello! I was wondering if you could help me."

"I certainly could," Fraser said, grinning at the new arrival. "What sort of help might you need, sir?"

"Oh," the Doctor said, returning the grin, "nothing serious. I was wondering if you might be able to tell me where we are? Don't meant to intrude on the party, just stopping by for directions."

"Well, the island is called Fandom and we were formerly located off the coast of Virginia," Fraser explained. "Currently, we are located off the coast of Santorini. The island moved a few days ago."

That certainly caught the Doctor's attention. "Really?" He'd never heard of Fandom or randomly moving islands unless there was technology involved. But Virginia? There were plenty of Virginias, but not many that would have a Mountie. He must have definitely still been on Earth. "Does that happen often?"

"The island moving?" Fraser shook his head. "No, this is a first and, most definitely, a surprise. It was as smooth move though. We were all safe after it happened."

"Oh, well, that's good. Moving islands can be very hazardous." He looked around. "No one seems bothered by the sudden change in location."

"Well, it did move us to a beautiful, warm location," Fraser said, smiling. "I don't think too many people would complain about that."

The Doctor grinned. "Good point. Very good. I like that. Sorry, I didn't introduce myself. I'm the Doctor."

"The Doctor," Fraser repeated. "I'm..the Constable, I suppose. Constable Benton Fraser, Royal Canadian Mounted Police and head of school security."

"School? That explains the crowd of teenagers." He snapped out of that line of thinking. "Pleased to meet you, Constable. I have to say, you're my very first Mountie. So about this school. Anything unusual about it? Weird? Kooky?" There had to be some reason why the TARDIS insisted he stayed put.

"You've never really heard of this place, have you?" Fraser asked in reference to that last question. "Last summer, aliens destroyed the school."

Fraser figured that was good for starters.

At the question, the Doctor looked like he was about to protest, but gave up on that quickly. The story about the aliens caught his attention and he wondered who was responsible. "So, sorry, really sorry, this'll sound silly, but I'm a little confused and disoriented. This is Earth, I'm assuming, silly I know, and this Fandom island was in Virginia in the United States but now it's near Santorini in Greece and I think I've followed so far, bear with me here, really sorry, but what year is it?"

"It's 2008," Fraser said, nodding. "And you're making complete sense, don't worry. I've lived here long enough that just about everything makes sense to me now."

"2008," the Doctor repeated. He was getting very good at that. "Something's not right. Does this kind of thing only happen here or is it normal for aliens to attack and islands to move of their own accord?"

He was getting there. It was taking a little time to piece together the puzzle, but he was getting there.

"It's quite normal for odd things to happen in this place," Fraser told him. "We've had trolls attacks, zombies attacks, everyone lost their ability to speak, a very deadly plague hit us earlier this year, the aforementioned aliens, instances of people suddenly turning into tiny versions of themselves and that'd just for starters."

"But not in Athens or Washington?"

"No, I do think the eccentricities of this island are contained to this island," Fraser told him. "If they spread, I certainly haven't heard a thing about it."

The Doctor breathed a sigh of relief. The timeline hadn't been messed with. "Excellent! Well then, Constable, thanks for your time. I think I see the food table. Might grab a snack, have a look around, get to know this place a little better."

"Of course," Fraser said, smiling at his excitement. "Enjoy yourself, Doctor and good luck."

He flashed another smile and started to wander off. The smile disappeared as he got further away from Fraser and saw the unfortunately familiar face of one Harriet Jones.

That wasn't going to end well.
