Fandom High Graduation Ceremony, Class of 2008, Saturday Afternoon (Part II)

After the last diploma had been handed out, the graduates were sent back to their seats, and Principal Washburn returned to the podium, to give her final speech and end the ceremony.

It was then that the rumbling started.

Odds were, if you asked the average citizen of Fandom to describe the town, they would tell you about the school, and the shops, and the beach and preserve, and all the areas of the island that existed above ground. But what they wouldn't describe was the island's biggest secret - beneath the ground, hidden from all of the town's inhabitants, was a city of ancient machines, designed to keep Fandom connected to every dimension it has ever touched, allowing people to continue to come from all over to live and grow on the island.

Although the existence of the underground city has always been hidden from Fandom's citizens - a safety measure, to ensure that none of Fandom's more power-hungry students or teachers try to use the machines for harmful purposes - it has not been a secret to everyone. During the night, fae and faeries of all sizes and power had come to make their way underground, and seize control of Fandom's machines, determined to have the unparalleled dimensional access for themselves. Although they were followed, the Wild Hunt had never caught its prey, and while the people of the town were occupied with graduation, the faeries struck, beginning to activate the machines.

But what the faeries didn't realize was that not all of the machines controlled access to dimensions. One machine in particular, one of the first to be activated, controlled the access to the city from above ground. As the machine chugged along, a section of the island lowered a few feet underground, allowing access to the city, the machines, and the faeries.

Of course, it just so happened that this section of land was where the platforms had been laid before graduation, and where the graduates had all been seated. As the platforms sank, a clear bubble covered the area where they'd been, allowing the audience to watch, but preventing them from being able to interfere or help. It was up to the graduates to defend themselves, and get rid of the fae.

Lana was still panting and was holding onto her injured shoulder, blood welling up slowly from between her fingers. She sat down on one of the few still standing chairs and stared up towards the surface.

Phoebe was there, looking for her and Anders. "Need some help?"

"Phoebe," Lana said with a tired smile. "Hey, I was co-valedictorian, did you see?"

Yeah, 'cause that was the important thing here. Funny how brains do that.

"Me too," Lana said with a smile. "Especially since I missed two years of classes in the middle there."

Phoebe nodded. "But you caught up and did so well."

"Yeah," Lana said with a sigh. "I guess I did. U New Haven won't be sorry they gave me a full ride, will they?"

Once Shawn had dealt with faerie he looked around to see if everyone else was doing okay. When he saw Lana, and saw blood, he made the assumption that she probably wasn't, and ran over.

"Lana?" He immediately went check on her. "Let me take a look?"

"Hey," she said with a smile. "Shawn. I'm afraid I'm not much to look at at the moment. Wrecked my robe and everything. That faerie thing ripped it up and then I got blood all over it."

"But I killed it."

"Yeah, blood which I'm gonna assume is yours?" Shawn pressed, crouching to her level and reaching out to the hands which were pressed over her wound.

Lana nodded. "Yeah, I didn't get out of the way quickly enough." She moved her hands away, wincing a little

Shawn sucked in a breath, and nodded. "But you got it in the end," he said offering her a smile. "And I can fix this up for you, easy. That's the important part."

"That's right," she said, smiling at him. "You can heal things. That is so cool. Do I need to get the robe out of the way?"

Ino darted over soon as she could. "Are you okay?" she asked, frowning at the blood.

Lana nodded. "I just didn't get out of the way fast enough. But I killed it. I remembered my stances and just added a chair."

She grinned at that. "Anything can always be used as a weapon. I'm so proud of you!" A beat. "But if you don't let me see that arm I'm going to scowl at you."

"Shawn healed it," Lana said, smiling over at him. "It's just old blood." But she was glad to let Ino examine it.

Ino was definitely going to examine it, no matter if it was healed or not. "You should make sure to clean the blood off soon," she said, with a smile. "Because that's totally not sanitary, you know, but I'm glad you're okay."

"Are you kidding?" Lana said. "The first thing I want is a shower. Or a bath. A nice long hot bath. And food. God, I'm hungry."

"Lana, are you okay?" Tori had spotted her friend and made a beeline for her.

"Tori, hey, you came!" Lana smiled up at her. "I'm good. Shawn healed me. I didn't quite get out of the way fast enough when that thing came at me."

"Like I'd miss it?" Tori laughed. "Good, I'm glad. Yeah, that looked like loads of fun." Yeah, not really. "Hey, you made it and you're officially a graduate, wow."

Yeah, that had been quite a graduation experience.

"Pretty amazing, huh?" Lana said. "It's hard to believe."

"Really amazing," Tori agreed, grinning brightly. "What are you thinking of doing now?"

"Um... showering," Lana said with a grin.
