Fandom High Graduation Ceremony, Class of 2008, Saturday Afternoon (Part II)

After the last diploma had been handed out, the graduates were sent back to their seats, and Principal Washburn returned to the podium, to give her final speech and end the ceremony.

It was then that the rumbling started.

Odds were, if you asked the average citizen of Fandom to describe the town, they would tell you about the school, and the shops, and the beach and preserve, and all the areas of the island that existed above ground. But what they wouldn't describe was the island's biggest secret - beneath the ground, hidden from all of the town's inhabitants, was a city of ancient machines, designed to keep Fandom connected to every dimension it has ever touched, allowing people to continue to come from all over to live and grow on the island.

Although the existence of the underground city has always been hidden from Fandom's citizens - a safety measure, to ensure that none of Fandom's more power-hungry students or teachers try to use the machines for harmful purposes - it has not been a secret to everyone. During the night, fae and faeries of all sizes and power had come to make their way underground, and seize control of Fandom's machines, determined to have the unparalleled dimensional access for themselves. Although they were followed, the Wild Hunt had never caught its prey, and while the people of the town were occupied with graduation, the faeries struck, beginning to activate the machines.

But what the faeries didn't realize was that not all of the machines controlled access to dimensions. One machine in particular, one of the first to be activated, controlled the access to the city from above ground. As the machine chugged along, a section of the island lowered a few feet underground, allowing access to the city, the machines, and the faeries.

Of course, it just so happened that this section of land was where the platforms had been laid before graduation, and where the graduates had all been seated. As the platforms sank, a clear bubble covered the area where they'd been, allowing the audience to watch, but preventing them from being able to interfere or help. It was up to the graduates to defend themselves, and get rid of the fae.

[Wait for the OCD, please! OCD is up! Have fun!]

"I prefer to think of it as enjoying thinking on my feet," Peter said as he turned around after landing... slowly. That wasn't good. "Do you know a Robin Goodfellow, by the way? I'm supposed to hit him."

"Is it possible for you to answer a question without asking another question?" Peter asked. His speed was slowed, sure, but that didn't matter when he was leaping through the air. The laws of physics would see to that.

If he could actually leap through the air at his current speed. With his acceleration at virtually nil, he couldn't exert the force to leave the ground more than a small hop. That really wasn't good.

"Don't you think it keeps us from really getting to know each other?" Peter asked, leaping out of the way of the water thanks to his returned speed and spider-sense. It just so happened that he landed on a metal chair. "I mean, we could probably be buddies if we could just really talk."

The wind knocked him off the chair and even blew his shoes right off. But he managed to snag the ground with a hand, anchoring himself. From there, he managed to plant another hand, then pull himself into a crouch. His hair and gown were being blown back, but he wasn't moving. "I talk more than most!" he shouted over the wind. "I'm probably not a good representation of the typical amount of talking that people do! Can you even hear me?"

Peter charged forward, grabbing the chair he had previously landed on. "Oh, I thought the ears were fake. You mean you didn't get them at a convention?" He swung the chair as he approached and waited to see what kind of spell the faerie tried this time.

"Aww, did that hurt?" Peter asked, flipping over the fae's attack, letting go of the chair, letting it cling to his besocked foot, and kicking at its head again but THIS TIME with the power of a chair.

"That wasn't a question!" Peter yelled as his chairless foot was caught by the ground. He flung the chair from his other foot as hard as he could manage, then made an attempt to pull his trapped foot free.

"Letgoletgoletgo," Peter repeated as he pulled on his leg as his spider-sense buzzed harder and harder in his head. "letgoletgoletOHTHANKGOD!" Peter yelled that as he barely flipped over the spell, heading upside down towards the fae. Out of pure instinct he threw a punch as he tried to spot where the chair had gone.

"Leave. Don't attack me or my friends anymore. Ever," Peter offered as he spotted the chair and picked it up. Just because he was offering mercy didn't mean he was being dumb enough to be unarmed.

"I gave you the option," Peter said, rushing forward and with an underhanded swing of the chair.

Peter cringed at the shrieks before looking down at his gown - which, he realized for the first time, had been somewhat battle-damaged - and started ripping strips off of it to tie the fae up. "Seriously, I don't want to kill you no matter how much you seem to want to be killed. Just be tied up and sit there or I'm just going to need to punch you until you're unconscious and I don't think either of us have the time for that, okay?"

"Sorry about the burning," Peter said as he set the chair back up between the fae and the battle as a warning. He then leaped back into the battle.
