Fandom High Graduation Ceremony, Class of 2008, Saturday Afternoon (Part II)

After the last diploma had been handed out, the graduates were sent back to their seats, and Principal Washburn returned to the podium, to give her final speech and end the ceremony.

It was then that the rumbling started.

Odds were, if you asked the average citizen of Fandom to describe the town, they would tell you about the school, and the shops, and the beach and preserve, and all the areas of the island that existed above ground. But what they wouldn't describe was the island's biggest secret - beneath the ground, hidden from all of the town's inhabitants, was a city of ancient machines, designed to keep Fandom connected to every dimension it has ever touched, allowing people to continue to come from all over to live and grow on the island.

Although the existence of the underground city has always been hidden from Fandom's citizens - a safety measure, to ensure that none of Fandom's more power-hungry students or teachers try to use the machines for harmful purposes - it has not been a secret to everyone. During the night, fae and faeries of all sizes and power had come to make their way underground, and seize control of Fandom's machines, determined to have the unparalleled dimensional access for themselves. Although they were followed, the Wild Hunt had never caught its prey, and while the people of the town were occupied with graduation, the faeries struck, beginning to activate the machines.

But what the faeries didn't realize was that not all of the machines controlled access to dimensions. One machine in particular, one of the first to be activated, controlled the access to the city from above ground. As the machine chugged along, a section of the island lowered a few feet underground, allowing access to the city, the machines, and the faeries.

Of course, it just so happened that this section of land was where the platforms had been laid before graduation, and where the graduates had all been seated. As the platforms sank, a clear bubble covered the area where they'd been, allowing the audience to watch, but preventing them from being able to interfere or help. It was up to the graduates to defend themselves, and get rid of the fae.

[Wait for the OCD, please! OCD is up! Have fun!]

It's not that Xander was surprised by something happening at graduation, because come on. And at least, yeah, no giant snake.

But...fairies? "What, taking over the school play wasn't badass enough for you guys?" he grumbled as he watched in annoyed helplessness.

Jo stared for a long moment. "Oh, that is so not fair," she said.

"What in the world..." mumbled Mike. No one had warned him about Fandom's graduations.

"Uh...what the hell is going on?" Lizzie said to no one in particular. And she also mentally started going through Meg's stuff to see if there was anything she wanted should her big sister croak during this.

Jared blinked. "Um, is that meant to happen?"

"...that's not normal," Lee muttered, standing up on his chair to try and watch better.

This was bad. This was very, very bad, and Sam got out of his seat to see if he could spot Dawn.

Ino? Ino was indignant and furious and wishing she could be on the other side of this. She was also standing somewhat precariously on her chair to see better.

"Why can't we fight?" A beat. "Kick their asses you guys!"

And she'd just, you know, try not to worry about Lana and Annette and A.J..

Kabuto took take care of himself. Ino had no worries there.

"Not again," Fraser grumbled, wincing and standing up but making no move to actually go beat on the bubble. He knew it was futile.

Danny had seen the return of the 4400, seen what Shawn could do... But still, nothing quite prepared him for faerie attack.

"What the hell?"

While Phoebe had been expecting something to happen -- hi, seen two of them and fought aliens who blew up the school -- she was not liking this.

She climbed up on her chair to see if she could see what was happening to her friends and family in that bubble.

Chloe stared as everyone disappeared.

Then she grabbed her camera and ran up to try to take pictures. Jimmy would never believe her if she didn't come back with photographic evidence.

Piper figured something would happen at graduation. It always did. Still, she had some friends in there. Her son was in there. She was going to worry.

The older version of Piper was right there with her.

"Oh hell no!" They both said in unison. Then they blinked and stared at each other.

Two pissed off and worried Pipers was probably a scary thing.

"PETER!" Mary Jane yelled. She looked around and at least the audience seemed to be safe. Realizing that she had better things to do than freak out, she turned to May. "It's okay," she said, calming herself down quickly. "He told me that this kind of thing happens every year."

She wasn't going to bring up what she heard about the school exploding last year. If May knew about that, reminding her wasn't going to help. If she didn't know, well, no point in worrying her.

Of course, the one guy on the island who had the powers of a Greek god (because he was a Greek god) who probably could have done something about the situation really had no inclination to.

In fact, a bucket of popcorn appeared in his right hand and he started munching away at its contents while he walked over to the edge of the bubble to watch the show.

"What the squall--" Zero scrambled to get a good view of what was going on in the hole. "Are those--THOSE ARE FAIRIES!"

...

"PETER! PETER! HIT ROBIN GOODFELLOW! PUCK! FIND HIM AND HIT HIM FOR ME!"

What?

Sokka ran up and pounded on it, even though he knew it wouldn't help anything.

Parker looked around for Ronan, or someone who knew magic, to tell her that no, she couldn't shoot the bubble. Or yes, she *could* shoot the bubble.

If she couldn't shoot it, she was throwing a shoe at it. Damnit.

Rachel jumped about a mile, geez oh man, at the sudden dropping of the platform, hand to her chest and eyes wide with surprise. She was surprised she didn't scream; or did she? She didn't know, but her heart was beating a mile a second and her hand was groping for her mother's arm in alarm.

"What just happened?"
