Altra was lying across the desk while Karal tidied around him.

There were books that needed to be shelved, and so Karal was shelving them, Altra pacing by his side.

Altra was chasing shadows and pouncing through sun beams, much to Karal's amusement. Even if the sun beams were making him sleepy.

The library was closed, so Karal curled up on one of the chairs, Altra sprawled across his lap, and napped.

Maybe napping hadn't been such a good idea. Karal was groggy and the tea was not helping. Altra was still asleep, snoring softly.

After hearing from Jaina about the rapidly approaching departure, John felt a need to discuss the situation with Karal, despite her assertion that it was no big deal.

"I hear you're heading out of town soon," he said, possibly a little more seriously than he intended.

Karal rubbed his forehead, trying to banish the last vestiges of sleepiness. "I am, yes," he replied quietly. "You've been speaking with Jaina?"

"Surprised that my girlfriend would tell me she was going on a potentially dangerous mission in three days?" he asked, trying to smile.

"Not surprised at all." Altra stirred, opening one eye to watch John for a moment, then he closed it again. "I wouldn't expect her to do otherwise."

Karal studied him, then sighed and leaned against the counter. "Whatever you want to say to me, John, please, just say it. Whatever questions you want to ask, I'll answer. I know how I'd feel if someone was taking Evey off with them to another world."

John nodded, glad Karal got it at least in part. That didn't mean John knew how to say this. "Jaina and Andrew, they're like..."

He paused, then started over. "Karal, I don't really have much of a... you know? But they are." He was using his hands to try to help convey what his words weren't saying about these people being his home, his family. "And everything."

His expression softened and he nodded in understanding. "I know, and I would never bring them into even the chance of danger if it wasn't important. Sunlord knows, they're very dear to me, both of them. I can't--" He rubbed his temple. "It should be safe. They should be safe. I can't promise, but I've done everything I can to ensure they all come back safely."

"I don't mean to make it more difficult to you, and I'm sure it's important," John said, pulling himself back together. "I just need you to know that I'm willing to help with anything you need done."

Karal held his eyes for a moment, then nodded, looking down at his hands. "Thank you. If there is anything, I'll remember your offer," he said, weighing it up, then glanced at Altra.

The Firecat opened one eye again, flicked an ear, and said to Karal, :It's not a secret. Tell him if you want.:

"Would it help if you knew what was happening? Why I asked them to come?" Some people preferred ignorance; others were comforted by knowledge. John could make the decision for himself.

John took a deep breath, considering the option. "They say knowledge helps with understanding, right?" He could at least count on Karal not to water down the importance of whatever it was they were doing. "Hit me."

"It's complicated." Karal folded his hands on the counter, sorting through everything in his head, before he began. "My world, Velgarth, has magic. Two thousand years ago, there was a Cataclysm which destroyed large parts of the world and left even greater parts so twisted by magic no one could live there. It was caused when two great mages warred against each other," he explained.

"In their final battle, waves of incredible magical power were loosed into the world and into the ethereal planes. Now, today, those waves are echoing forward through time and threatening the countries of the Alliance and all of Velgarth. They are great storms, mage storms, that wreak havoc and destruction everywhere they touch." He glanced up at John. "Is this making sense to you so far?"

[ooc: And now I must sleep - back in my morning!]

Not really, but that was mostly because he was still in awe of magic stuff. Let alone magical storms. His mental picture of this was sort of like crickets.

"Completely," John replied. "Magic is threatening your world."

He smiled a little at John's response. "Yes, essentially. The mages of the Alliance managed to raise, well, think of it as a magical breakwater, to fend off the storms, but it is going to fall. In eight days. When it falls, if the storms are not stopped, the destruction will be unimaginable."

This bit was the most complicated, and he took a moment to decide how to express it. "One of the mages whose war resulted in the Cataclysm sealed his most dangerous magical devices, ones that were two dangerous for him to use, in a vault before he died. That vault is buried deep under the ground, and guarded by an entire nation, one which is part of the Alliance. Until several weeks ago, this was a secret. Among those devices is one which can counter the storms, but it's one that draws power from my world, from the ethereal planes, and from other worlds. It uses people from those other worlds as conduits. Four of them." He took a deep breath. "Jaina, Andrew, Gavin and Evey."

"So, you're using them as extension cords to their dimensions," John said. "And Jaina said it was no big deal." They were so going to talk.

[How is this you sleeping?]

Karal blinked. "Extensions cords to..." Altra opened both his eyes and stared at John. "Umm, actually, that's a very good way of describing it," he said slowly, exchanging a look with Altra. "And I don't know if it is a big deal to a Jedi. And Altra has given his word that, should anything begin to go wrong, he will Jump the four of them to safety. The worst they should suffer is a few days of being very tired, a headache, and soreness from several days of riding."

[hush, you! I'm totally going now.]

Andrew walked into the library looking for Karal. "Karal?" he whispered loudly. "Are you here?"

John nodded, he was surprisingly capable of condensing complicated things into simple ideas at times. Even if magic was freaky.

"Nothing's ever a big deal that that Jedi," John informed him. "Mostly because she's been through so much, but it still sounds dangerous to have that much energy moving through a person, regardless of it being a worthwhile risk."

Liir came in with a little bag of food (http://www.epicurious.com/recipes/food/views/241890) for Karal, one of the Queen's books under his other arm.

"Morning."

He was glad to see Karal.

"There is some risk," he acknowledged. "Which is why I asked Altra to promise he'd Jump them out at the first sign of danger."

"I'm here," he called quietly, coming out of the end of one of the shelves. "Here, Andrew."
