Sociology 310 and 500 Class Meetings

SOC 310: Death and Dying

Your presentations on the burial customs of any society are due today. Please share your findings with the class, and any students who would like to ask you a question may do so.

For next class, please read this excerpt from The Savage God by A. Alvarez

SOC 500: Deviance

Today in class, we will go around in a circle, and you will each share your discussion questions that you culled from your research into your project topic.

After, I will give an introductory lecture on Michael Foucault.

For next class, I would like you to read Foucault's Discourse and Truth: the Problematization of Parrhesia, you will be asked to discuss several topics from it in class next week. You may be quizzed on the material.

Also, big honking sign on the door -

ATTENTION ALL SOCIOLOGY STUDENTS: You have been invited by Ms. Sidle in the Science Department to attend a field trip next Thursday to the Body Farm, which I will also be attending. Anyone who is interested in coming along must sign up below. Crimininology students, class will meet after the trip.

- Grissom

*may not actually be in class depending on the severity of a sudden and unexpected case of having her butt handed to her by Hathor!Janet she suffered earlier in the day, but if she is Callisto gives a presentation on the usual funeral customs of her homeland, which involve cremation and mourning chants, of which she plays a recording (http://s5.yousendit.com/d.aspx?id=1IPCKLIKRRLTL39RWTQ7XQ3GNN), all the while nursing numerous bruises and contusions*

Rogue's presentation is of the buirial customs of the Gaul's in France. It's well put together, with a nice three-fold board and pictures.

Allie is worried that her presentation won't be up to snuff since she missed a week of classes, but she gives her best effort.

She also signs up for the field trip. She figures learning how to handle being around dead bodies might be an important skill for becoming a doctor.

"Thanks Dr. Grissom. I'm looking forward to the field trip next week."

Susan does her presentation, which is thorough, but lacking a little.

"Sorry," she explains afterwards. "Burials just aren't of much interest to me."

*Stark stands up and starts speaking on Peacekeeper burials in space. The presentation isn't exactly linear, but linear thinking was never his strong suit. He goes off on a few tangents and examples of things he's seen, but he manages to get the necessary elements across*

*Marty speaks on the subject of how various cultures use certain burial rites to prepare the soul for the afterlife, though at one point gets off topic on the subject of forks.*

*signs attendance sheet*

*shares question*

*leaves class as soon as the bell rings with a quick explanation to Grissom that he's knee-deep in the Student Council stuff and thus can't linger, much as he'd like to*

Wednesday is bearing a larger than usual stack of various books and campaign materials, but still managing to not have a hair out of place. Finding a seat, she waited for her turn before producing her discussion question.

"As my deviant subculture of choice is Suburbanites, the question that I should like to propose for discussion is the matter of conformity within the subculture. What is it that causes the extremely narrow subclasses and definitions such as 'Soccer Mom' and 'PTA Dad' and why do Suburbanites place so much importance on fitting into their role as such?"

"That's a point I had not considered." Wednesday frowned and made a note. "If you consider also the fact that half of them spend most of their waking hours outside their community indulging in industry somewhere actually urban, perhaps it is spread through contact in the workplace?"
