How to Survive Your Own Cooking: The Final

Lulu's smile was, perhaps, a little bit smirk-ier than normal, as the class entered the home ec room. "Good afternoon," she said, as she leaned back against her desk. "Today is your final. All the ingredients you may require -- any many that you wish to use beyond that -- are available to you, although none of them have been prepared for you in advance. You have three options before you today. Each one will suffice as your examination, but each one has its advantages and disadvantages.

"The first option is to prepare lasagne al forno. This has the advantage of being a somewhat easier recipe, but has the disadvantage that your maximum possible grade is only 75%.

"The second option, for which the maximum possible grade is a full 100%, is to make a ham and cheese soufflé.

"The third option is to make chicken cordon in phyllo pastry, the most difficult recipe here today. Because of this, your potential maximum grade on your final exam then becomes 150%."

Lulu's smiled widened. "Choose wisely," she said. "There are a range of possibilities here. Consider that a spectacular failure may yet net you more points than a somewhat less spectacular success." She waved to the stations.

"Your time begins now. You have one hour."

[ZOMG, I finally remembered to post the night before. OCD is up! will be up in a few. Yes, Lulu is cruel. Very cruel. But aren't you hungry now? ;)]

He listened thoughtfully and considered whether he'd want to use more or less flour for his phyllo.

Sam stared at the recipes, caught between wanting to pick an easier recipe, or try the hard one to fulfill his overachieving needs. Argh, decisions.

Harry kind of stared for a while, wondering what to do.

Liir's final came out exceedingly well, though he tweaked the recipe somewhat for a flakier phyllo and a creamier sauce with a bit more pepper.

Preference.

Mikey decided to go with the ham and cheese soufflé.

Somehow, it turned out looking more like a ham and cheese pizza.

Ah, the great mysteries of life.

Demyx went with the easy one. For him, he'd made considerable improvement in that he didn't burn anything...or flood it. And he actually made something resembling food.

Jenny tried to make the souffle. Emphasis there on tried. It didn't really go very well, and Jenny looked like she'd been through a war zone by the time it was over, but it was. Edible.

Probably.

Sam got about halfway through the chicken recipe before his eyes glazed over and he realized he didn't even know what phyllo really was. So, he focused on the soufflé instead, putting all of his effort into it to try to make sure it was worth full credit.

Taking Lulu's "spectacular disaster" advice to heart, Cassandra picked the chicken and phyllo. She turned out to have a surprising level of skill with the dough-making process and somehow she managed to get all the way to the final cutting stage before she realized she had no idea what the "desired size" was. She'd... uh... come back to that later.

The sauce should have been easy, and at first it was, but Cassandra kept getting distracted and managed to scorch it. Oops.

Not knowing what was involved in pounding chicken breast to 1/8 inch thick, Cassandra just skipped that part. She managed to pre-cook them properly but quickly found that full-sized chicken breasts are hard to roll around the fillings.

By the time she got back to the dough it had been sitting out for nearly half an hour with predictably brittle results.

Still, in the end, she had some chicken and some sauce and some dough that was all roughly edible. Just... not combined quite as it was supposed to be.

Chad...well, Chad never had a problem with cooking; he'd always been fairly good at it. So he went with the more difficult recipe, the chicken cordon whatever, and he did fairly well with it, too.

He was wondering what was going to happen to all the food at the end of this.

Especially the failed ones.

Makoto was all for trying hard but 'she' took one look at the chicken cordon recipe and immediately decided to try the soufflé one instead.

In the end? It looked pretty awful, but it tasted kind of alright. Was edible, certainly.

Summer attempted to make the ham and cheese soufflé. It didn't go as well as she would have liked. Though it was somewhat edible. That, at least, was proof that the class helped her improve a little.

Haku chooes the more difficult chicken, just because he liked a challenge. His phyllo dough turned out a bit more like puff pastry though, but he susbsituted the swiss in the chicken for a softer more maliable flavored version (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Laughing_Cow). All in all he thought it was pretty darn good.

Confidence is one thing that Carmela Rodriguez does not lack. Of course, confidence doesn't equal *stupidity*, which is why she goes for the ham and cheese souffle. Because she knows she can pull this one off pretty well. And indeed, she does.

Harry went for the soufflé, mostly because soufflé was a fun word to say.

The results were edible, yay! They weren't pretty, and were much less puffy than they should have been. And they weren't delicious by anyone's standards. But they were edible. Harry was okay with that.

Liir was still working since he'd, of course, picked the most difficult dish but he kept himself available if he was needed.

"Glad to prove up to expectations," he said with a faint grin.

"How did everyone else do?"

Re: Speak to Lulu

[identity profile] new-to-liirness.livejournal.com 2008-04-23 12:53 am (UTC)(link)
"That's good at least. I'd feel like I failed you if it all turned out badly," he admitted as he settled in a seat near her.

Re: Speak to Lulu

[identity profile] new-to-liirness.livejournal.com 2008-04-23 01:03 am (UTC)(link)
He smiled.

"But as no one's been failed, or it sounds like that anyway, then it's a moot point, isn't it?"

Re: Speak to Lulu

[identity profile] new-to-liirness.livejournal.com 2008-04-23 01:16 am (UTC)(link)
He leaned back in his seat.

"Could I... that is, you know those lessons we have on occasion?"
