Choose Your Own Government--Monday--Period 5--Class # 14

"Hello, my class, and thank you very much for your patience with my absence last week," Vala said, as soon as everyone was seated and paying as much attention as she figured they were going to. "Thank you also for not giving Evey a problem. I appreciate that very much, and to show my appreciation, the final next week is going to be a bit...different."

Mostly so she wouldn't have to grade it, but this was a good reason, too.

"As I'd mentioned previously, today we'll be discussing theocracies and religious oppression." There might have been a quick glance at Karal to see how he was doing with this before she continued. "If you're part of the majority religion, what are your reasons for limiting the practice of other religions? How far are you willing to go? If you're a member of a minority religion, what actions can you take to keep yourself, your family, and your community safe? How far should you take those actions? At what point is it worth it to give up the religion instead of fighting the majority?"

Gwynn was taking notes on Vala's lecture.

Anemone listened, interested. She hadn't really been exposed to the various religious factions at home, and wasn't sure if Dewey's government counted as a theocracy or not.

John was becoming less and less pleased with the flock of mini sheep following his every movement. He'd taken to poking them with his pen.

Karal was not exactly comfortable with the topic, but he listened attentively, giving Vala a small nod when she looked at him.

He wasn't overly comfortable with the wee sheep that were clinging to his feet, either. Or the one that was hanging onto his curls.

"If it is something matters deeply to you and the person you are, then you never pick a time when it isn't worth fighting the majority."

"If you're the minority, then you're never safe," Anemone said. "If the ruling party takes it into their heads to turn the populace against you, if they decide it's easier to wipe you out than deal with your heresy, then you're never going to be safe."

She thought about the Vodarek, and the Great Wall, and looked down at her desk. "And be very, very, sure in your gods. They aren't always what you think we are."
