"We've gotten all the way up to the year 2000--or 2001, depending on how you measure it," Steve conceded. "So, what's going on with art in the twenty-first century? It's a little early to tell yet, so rather than lecture you on it, we're going to watch an episode of the public television documentary series Art: 21."

Steve found himself kind of enchanted by the idea of protest art. Inspired, even.

...great, he was going to have to make a trip to the art supply store on the mainland after class.

Naminé hesitated, and then waited after class to hopefully talk to Steve.

Steve looked up from the rough ideas he was sketching in his pad and realized he probably looked really serious, so he pulled up a smile. "Yes, Naminé?"

She smiled back, faintly. "I don't know how to tell you this. But I think ... I haven't much time left."

Oh, there went the smile. "What?"

"I'm sorry," she said quickly. "It seems melodramatic to go around telling people, so I wasn't going to at all, but that seems almost rude, to disappear without any warning."

"Are you leaving?" Steve asked.

"I think I will be," she said, very softly. "I wish I didn't have to."

"Where will you be going?" Steve asked gently.

Naminé swallowed past a lump. "Back to her," she said. "I don't know how yet. I'm not sure how I know, to be honest."

Now Steve was really confused. "Back to who? I'm afraid I don't understand, Namine. What's going on?"

Naminé took an uncertain breath. "Kairi. The girl I was, before. Something's changed. I can't explain it, I don't know how I know. I can feel it, like a clock winding down. I have to ... go be with her, again."

It was almost like it made sense, but not quite. "But you're not her. You're you now," Steve argued.

"I know," she said, shaking her head. "It doesn't seem ... fair, exactly, but then no one ever said life was. I shouldn't complain."

"Now, what makes you say that?" Steve wondered.

She smiled, faintly. "I've had two years. Friends and love and experiences I never imagined. If that's really all that I'm to have ... it's far more than I ever thought I might. This island is a wonderful place. I'd wish for more, but I can't help feeling blessed. Maybe that's strange."

"I don't know," Steve said, "two good years is...something. You're talking to the wrong man if you want to be told you shouldn't fight, though."
