Sneaky Spycraft: Period 5, Week 12

Aly was slightly tan and looking happy when the class arrived. "Hope you all had a good weekend," she said, glancing around. "Good job, all of you last week on the scenario. I'm impressed with some of your answers. Some of you were a bit more byzantine than others, and always remember that less things can go wrong with simplicity."

"So today we're going to be very simple. So simple that we're blowing things up - with improvised devices. It doesn't seem particularly sneaky at the outset, no, but trust me a well-placed explosion can solve many a problem. Some of you have worked with these materials before in my classes - don't worry about that, have fun and help those who haven't."

"The two explosives we're going to work with today are two improvised explosives. You don't always have access to military material and you definitely don't always need it. One of the most common explosives in this word - and also one of the easiest to make is anfo - fertiliser and fuel oil. It sounds simple, but it's an immensely powerful explosive. A ton or so in a the right place could blow up a cargo ship and the harbor it's sitting in - if you can get it into the cargo ship, of course. The other is less an explosive than a weapon. Molotov cocktails - half gasoline, and half motor oil - you've probably already heard of them if you're from this world. They're easy to make and can do a lot of damage especially against gasoline engines or wood structures."

"What the plan is today is to spend some time discussing tactics with these weapons. When would one of these particular types of explosive devices be useful? Then make the anfo into a bomb, put together a Molotov cocktail, and blow some stuff up."

I'm sorry for the recycled class! I'm starting a new job this week (*flails*) and I totally blanked on the need for a class because I kinda suck. I don't have internets at work yet *CRIES* so Aly won't be around until 5ish EDT.]

Under what circumstances would these two types of bombs be useful? Why would you use them? What makes them so useful?

The fuel oil and the fertiliser need to be mixed up. As soon as that happens, the fertiliser starts oxidizing and will be ready to explode.

After it's mixed, there are pipes for the mixture to be tamped into and fuses to be added.

Play with it handwavily. If you want to screw up and have it ignite too soon, that's fine, but Danger Room so you won't get hurt. Just a flash and a bit of a bang to show you screwed up.

[OOC: I know, I'm totally messing with the chemistry of the ignition, but go with it handwavily for me?]

Mix half gasoline, half motor oil (so the gasoline will stick) and pour it into a glass bottle and stop it up with a rag.

There are plenty of supplies for everyone to make things as loud as possible.

Anfo was not Eve's friend, as she discovered from the three pipes that went flash-and-bang in front of her.

The fourth one? Cooperated and went bang right where it was supposed to.

She was probably a little too gleeful about this.

Molotov cocktails FTW! Eve was content to mix 'em, light 'em, and throw 'em at the nearest buildings.

She was having waaaaaay too much fun with this.

I apologize for Eve's glee -- apparently I'm channeling my frustrations today or something. *facepalm*

Dōjima was practically bouncing in her seat as she took notes. Aly-sensei was the coolest teacher ever.

Dōjima was in love with the Anfo. Anything that could mixed up, lit, and left to 'boom' on its own was pure awesome.

Ooo - science! Willow was all about that. She possibly had more fun putting everything together than she did blowing stuff up.

Explosives as a coping device. This was something Isabel could get behind. The only thing that could have made it better was if she could have blown up the bear.

Billy hadn't done this in a while, but he learned it was like riding a bike. He put it into a pipe bomb and just kinda looked at it.

Zuko was there, but he still thought that firebending was better.

Yay new job!

Sokka spent the majority of the class making pipe bombs, daisy-chaining them together, and packing them tightly in an out-of-the-way corner. Humming softly to himself.

With only a few minutes left before the bell, he lit the shared fuse and ran as far away as he could. The explosion was BEAUTIFUL.

Just for old time's sake, Sokka walked up to Aly after class was over and offered her a lit Molotov cocktail.

Mel threw a wad of paper at Sokka's head.

The dork.

Sokka shot Mel an innocently confused look of "What? What did I do?" and then snatched the wad of paper off the floor and threw it back at her.

Mel just smirked and threw another paper wad at Sokka's head.

Jack: Uh, can I borrow the Danger Shop and some of the fun stuff?

This, of course, meant WAR.

It was the work of a few seconds to shred the paper wad down into smaller pieces, and Sokka started flicking paper pellets at her rapid-fire.
