Speaking in Tongues [4.4.08]

Karal greeted everyone as they came in, jumping languages with each person. When they were all settled, he stood up. "I was trying to think of things we could do that would be fund and would test our abilities in the languages we've learned, and I found out about this travelling game. It's usually played in a car, but I thought it might work well for us."

He gave everyone an encouraging smile. "What you do is the first person says that they are going to the fair, and they are taking something beginning with an 'a', and the second person says they are going to the fair, that they are taking the first person's 'a' object, and adds an object starting with 'c', then the third says both they are taking both 'a' and 'b' objects, and adds one beginning with 'c', and so on and so on. By the time we get to the end, there will be a lot of objects to remember - if we use different languages to name them, it should help us practice!"

[ooc: wait for OCD, plz.]

At some point John found his way over to talk to Karal. "I owe you an apology," he said, not at all proud of the way his six-year-old self had acted over the weekend.

"And I should not have gotten upset and shot you," John added. "Even if it was only water, I should have better control."

"I was six," John replied. "But trust me, even then I could've had better control."

"That's a good plan," John said, relieved. "How's Trenor doing after all the kids?"

"Sounds like he's taking care of himself," John said, laughing lightly.

"I did," John said, half-smiling. "His name was Doc."

A carefully, evenly folded note went skittering towards Karal.

"I figured out a way you could make it up to our fake child and me that you ditched us a couple of weekends back."

Adah wrote again, tearing out the second piece of paper and taking her time folding it. She figured, since the request was fairly anticlimactic, that she should at least try to maintain the suspense of it for as long as she was able. She could, of course, fold exceptionally well with just her one hand. Years of practice in doing so to send notes to Leah when she should have been paying attention to her father. But one wouldn't know it by looking at how slow and precise she was being now.

"Cover my library shift this coming Wednesday?"

At the response, Adah smirked, and then, unable to hold it back, though she tried, she let out an almost perfectly silent laugh. She shook her head before writing her next note, which didn't require nearly as much ceremonial folding.

"I could try to think of something more taxing if you'd really like; I'm sure I can come up with a good one, no problem. But, as it stands, that's all I need. It's the only way I can manage a brief departure home."

Adah's grinning gained a bit of volume in a short, snorting breath of a laugh.

"The rabbits are the reason I'll be gone, so no, but thank you for the offer. They're coming with me. And not coming back."

Except perhaps one, but Adah still hadn't made up her mind regarding that.

Of course, it was already water under the bridge, swept away in eddies of nonimportance and rivulets of passing memories, but, as far as Adah was concerned, Karal didn't necessarily need to know that.

"As well as one can be, anyway," was her simple reply, with a cool, reluctant sort of glance rimming her wide eyes.

Adah's head ducked with the sort of nod of returning gratitude, knowing full well that she needn't waste any more paper to convey the amicable conclusion of their agreement.

All the remained left for her to do to get her ducks in a row, then, for the trip home was to note to the Eel that he could probably forget about her request to punch Karal if he met him. She didn't intend on telling him she wouldn't be there Wednesday to make up for when he didn't tell her the same about a Sunday, and, besides, she was wondering if he'd show up anyway. He hadn't this week, after all...

Inara was there, too.
