Speaking in Tongues [28.03]

Karal looked a little sheepish today. "I have a feeling that me choosing this as today's club topic might be a surprise to some of you, but sometimes, you have no choice. You need to curse. Whether you've just glued your fingers to a desk, or fallen down the stairs, or received a piece of terrible news," or you've discovered a gremlin has made your girlfriend thinks she is some sort of be-wigged hussy, "the need is there. By doing it in a language none around you understand, you can fulfil the need without giving offence to anyone."

He lifted his hands and waved at them in a shooing gesture. "So, go forth and teach each other to swear for the purposes of education and giving voice to anger without offending people. To start us off, sheka is shin-a-in for, umm, manure, and eseka is the same in Karsite."

Of course he was flushing slightly, but this was an important part of any language.

Oddly enough, Hoshi had no trouble swearing in a handful of different languages. She found that listening to Gunther once a week made her totally immune to it.

Liir was writing down some curse words he knew in common Ozian, Quadling (provided by Elphaba's mutters), certain Gilikin dialects (from the soldiers at Red Windmill), Dwarvish (from a woman he'd woken up in an alley to in the Emerald City and well he'd figured out things from connotation etc.), Arjiki (from the traders), Ugabu (from a traveler who'd come through the mauntery), Scrow (from the tribe representatives), Yunamata (from the tribe representatives), and a couple of swear words that seemed to be used primarily by Animals.

...he didn't know nearly as many languages as anyone and none other than his native Ozian to any decent degree, but swearing was another matter entirely.

Romeo had picked up a rather interesting set of Victorian French slang in Montmartre, and would be happy to share it with anyone who talked to him.

Andrew was there, copying down each new word he learned and taking careful notes.

Liir didn't like to distract Andrew when they were at class or things like this, but he had been, er, reading all day.

As such, every once in a while he'd look over and his cheeks would turn red as wine before he'd get back to recording his own list.

Andrew totally noticed Liir glancing in his direction, and, in an attempt to be suave, tried to wink the next time he caught his eye.

..oh that didn't help in the least. He was writing on the next sheet of paper down at this point.

Inara was there, trying her very best to be perfectly poised and serene, then ruined it completely by blushing horribly whenever she happened to glance at Karal.

Maybe under the desk would be better.
