Even Haute Couture Can Be A Hot Mess: Don't Depend On Designers
Welcome back! Class this week had a very serious subject, so everyone should sit down and pay close attention. This was an advanced class, right here. Were they ready? This was a topic very, very close to Tink's own heart.

Because sometimes - she hated to admit this, but it was true! - people who spent a lot of time and a lot of money becoming fashionable and glamorous and becoming exquisite, wonderful designers of very chic expensive clothes ... sometimes, those people lost their freaking minds.

"I can't agree more," Barney nodded. "Take Robin, for instance. Not the frog. I've seen this totally hot chick with normally outstanding taste pair a cardigan with a bustier. We call it, the bradigan. It is horrendous, no matter how ripe her melons are."

One moment: Tink needed to get over that mental picture. There! All better. But what a fabulous example! After all, there were people - otherwise attractive, completely sane people - who insisted on wearing pants underneath dresses. Pants. Under a dress. Usually jeans.

"Thank god for hot suits," Barney said. "Men, you have no excuse for looking like idiots. Except for the fact that you are idiots."

Exactly her point, and thank you so much, Barney, for leading to it so eloquently! Fashion designers themselves can't be trusted! Many a new and budding fashion-forward young lady has thought to herself, I shall put my trust in the sainted houses of chic, and let them guide me. And then the designers decide that, for spring, what is in is a frightening mess of leg-warmers, formal shorts, and tacky, hideous colors! It breaks Tink's black little heart!

"We should order you some tiny dark sunglasses to hide the shamefulness of these designs as worn by the Fandom High student body from your sensitive eyes," Barney offered. "We could go shopping after class, take the sting out."

See? He was wonderful. He had such clever ideas and he liked to spend money on such pretty things. Ones for her. Ooooh, and they should stop by the office and pester someone. Their office still didn't have a hot tub in it. Did they realize the stressful, awful job that teaching was? How could they possibly ask Tink and Barney to go on being fabulous without a hot tub?

"Oooh, hot tub," Barney went to a happy place and was rather lost for a moment. Hot tub...

Tink did, too. But she only allowed herself to stay there for a moment. Because this was serious. This was important. Students! Designers were, at the end of the day, just people, as capable of failure and idiocy as the rest of your species. Being fashion-forward does not mean turning off your brain! Only you can stop this horrifying trend of leg warmers and shirts worn as dresses. Trust your instincts.

Except for Mr. Weasley, who should never, ever trust his instincts, fashion-wise. He should pay someone to pick out clothes, for him.

There was nothing wrong with wearing bright colors, so long as you had the personality to pull it off. That's Dōjima's philosophy, anyway.

Romeo was glad yet again to be a guy (even if he still thought his teachers were wrong about the Hawaiian shirts). There was much less embarrassment potential for him in the designs than there was for, well, certain unfortunate girls.

Brooke's jaw dropped as she tried to figure out the bradigan, especially since she'd thought Robin had things together. But Brooke herself usually did. She couldn't think of any misses.

And then she was raising her hand. "What's wrong with formal shorts? My legs are hot."

She was young.

Jack? There was nothing wrong with Jack's clothes. They were fierce (http://static.flickr.com/26/54309832_0d48d370a4.jpg) and he even looked good in uniform (http://us.movies1.yimg.com/movies.yahoo.com/images/hv/photo/movie_pix/walt_disney/sky_high/_group_photos/kurt_russell3.jpg) or in normal everyday clothes (http://blogs.theage.com.au/schembri/big.jpg).

Reno... really never had to worry about his fashion sense.

The biggest change in wardrobe that ShinRa ever made him tolerate was changing the suit from black to blue, and then back again. And even blue suits looked properly hot when worn mostly unbuttoned and untucked. Honestly.

Luke smirked. Compared to some of the outfits in his galaxy, his choices of "black outfit" or "beige outfit" seemed positively subdued.

His hair, naturally, was another problem altogether.

Designers say haute couture is more about art than anything someone is expected to wear off a runway. Is that really an excuse to make people wear things that are not exquisite and gorgeous?

Is it possible that, after years of making pretty clothes for pretty people, designers get bored, and that's when hideous atrocities like formal shorts happen?

Is there any excuse for letting Chloe Sevigny have her own fashion line (http://gofugyourself.typepad.com/go_fug_yourself/2008/03/all-of-yesterda.html) at Opening Ceremony (http://fabsugar.com/1091035), other than large amounts of illicit drugs?

Discuss! These are important, burning questions! Especially burning in the case of Chloe!
