Library [28.03]

Karal was a tiny bit dazed as he opened the library this morning.

He was also absent a Firecat, the reason for which was partly responsible for his dazedness.

Very silly. Also highly amusing. :)

I actually glued my shoe to the floor today at work while trying to repair an ornament that I dropped while I was shelving stock.

Weird gluing mishaps for the win!

Like clockwork (though he would have been somewhat distressed to hear it call that), Liir slipped into the library with a bag of lunch (http://www.cookingdebauchery.com/cooking_debauchery/2008/03/bbq-shrimp.html) to be enjoyed later by man and Firecat (should he choose to show up). He put the bag on the counter before peering, somewhat worried, over at Karal.

"Good morning," he said cheerfully, glad that Karal had noticed. Though after that, he continued to peer.

"Did you get enough sleep last night?"

"Andrew is well," he said with a brightening of his smile. He thought about the research he was planning to do today and blushed.

"And I'm well enough. Still a bit vexed over the matter of writing I've yet to do, but otherwise very well enough. I'll soon have work in a kitchen, if I haven't mentioned it before."

He tipped his head to the bag.

"Do tell me what you think of it sometime after, since it was something a bit new that I tried today. Neither you nor Altra have trouble with shrimp, do you?"

"Oz is as well, to be honest," which he tended to be when it came to food especially, "and I've never dealt with the things before today, but I liked the recipe and didn't want to change it.

"And I thought you must be quite tired of chicken."

He grinned.

"The Cafe Fina will be taking me on, it seems. I've already told Miss Lulu and she's happy for me and hopefully, I'll be able to get my hours on Wednesday when Andrew's working so we won't be at odds to schedule things."

His head, and his face, fell.

"As for the letter, I don't. Professor Ambrose has asked to handle it for the moment. I'm... I trust him."

"What did Andrew tell you, if you don't mind me asking?"

He winced.

"I didn't want to keep it from him, though I admit I feel terrible he saw that nonsense Shell wrote about him."

He looked up at Karal.

"You know I'd never think anything like that, yes?"

"As both mother and father are unknown in my case, other than the testimony of a goldfish, I'd say any claim would be considered ridiculous," he answered with a shake of his head. "Even Nanny never knew where I came from; no wonder as she came to the Vinkus after we did. Not that anyone would care.

"I'm a street rat in Oz, a crumb on a crumb of a crusty old apple crumble. He's a government official, even if most people seem to be aware he's a bounder."

He breathed out.

"Just another reason for why I won't be going back, I suppose."

He looked at Karal, a little alarmed.

"The people here wouldn't support any claim he made, would they? The school officials or anything?"

The idea that he was of any value was an alien one to him in all directions. His worth, Karal had told him, was not based on his ability to serve others... and yet no one seemed to have an answer for what it should be based on that satisfied him. That he was a being in his own right, that his Liirness justified himself, didn't settle well with him and he didn't know if it was because he was wrong or because they were being too kind.

And power? Him? Oranges and being able to send himself into fits or, heaven forbid, some other creature should he choose (though it would harm him almost as much)? That was ability, right enough, potential... but who was to say he would fulfill it? He intended to and in truth he didn't think he would be able to stand life with his senses awake and his guards as low as they were at the moment since no place was as kind as this, but something like a Wizard? No. Not him. He couldn't see it. He didn't want to see it as well as it was too much responsibility.

A cook, perhaps. A sous chef or even the chef of a restaurant, that was feasible. The worst he could cause someone then would be indigestion.

The mention of allies from other worlds, though, that was comforting enough. Though not when it came to thinking of Shell conniving to harm any of them. That was what vexed him the most sorely.

"As you say," was his only response, accompanied by a nod. Karal had heard most of it before, after all, and he didn't want to take up his whole morning. He had to be off to work, after all. "As it is, I'll try and put it out of my mind for the moment. There are better things to focus on, yes?"

He wasn't repressing, only dealing with those things he felt he could handle. For one, because he'd determined while cooking the meal to have a good day today. And for two, despite their quarrels, Liir hadn't forgotten all the work Karal had sitting in his room and wished to add no more hassle to him.

The only problem being how very much he didn't trust Shell.

"Exactly," he agreed.

"Now, if you're all right," and he gave one last careful look to make sure Karal was "I should probably head off to work. I'll see you at language club?"

He nodded.

"Very good. See you soon, I'm sure."

At which point he doffed an invisible cap and trotted his way out the door.
