Library [21.03]

Karal was late opening the library, and a bit befuddled when he did so. He had Edgar the droid baby with him, and made up a palette behind the counter to keep her safe. Altra, who was looking very amused, sprawled next to her.

Between what the morning had brought yet to be played out and what he and Gabriel were doing this afternoon, he was in a bit of a daze.

On her way to the hotel River stopped by the library to see if she could find an inspiring cookbook or two. Instead she was faced with a screamin droid baby. "I had one of those last semester," she told Karal.

He was edging on being late for work, but he had his responsibilities. And hopefully today's lunch (http://community.livejournal.com/food_porn/2303709.html#cutid1) would sweeten her temper if she minded him being a few minutes tardy.

He looked a little rough around the edges; not because of any laxness in his grooming. On the contrary, his hair was actually tamed. But there were shadows beneath his eyes and the headache he'd had most of the night was evident enough even if he wouldn't complain.

"Morning," he said with a brief smile as he put the bag on the counter.

Gavin wandered in after his class, sidling up to the desk and made a face at Karal just because.

"I placed mine in a cupboard," River replied. "Then Adah wanted to dissect it so I did that for her."

He looked sideways at the droid baby but paid it no mind as he brightened his smile a little.

"A headache. It started last night and hasn't ceased, so I slept poorly. Andrew helped with it, though, so it's tolerable now."

It wasn't Monday but Dean figured other librarians than Sammy deserved lunch delivered sometimes so he showed up in the library today with soups and subs.

He paused and listened to Karal for a moment. "Trying to convert tin cans now?"

He shook his head.

"I should be all right," he admitted. "I know what caused it and I'm not about to talk to her again for a while so it should fade out soon enough."

He wasn't going any farther, there. As far as he was concerned, Karal probably knew about it but the discussion was with Evey. He'd settled things with Karal, though there'd been a lesson learned there.

"Thank you, though, for the offer. I've got some letter work of my own to deal with and I don't want to be even the least bit fuzzy when I'm at it, is all."

"I wasn't going to specify if she hadn't chosen to tell you," he said plainly, emotional content of his voice starting to slip away, the 'colors' fading. "When I say I won't be speaking to her, I mean to give her more time than I did the last time. Apparently, I estimated poorly."

And the narrowing of the eyes did it.

He drew back, just leaning but it was noticeable.

"As for my headache, I'll be fine," he continued, his tone more and more blank. Not cold. Not insolent. Simply blank. "The shop isn't particularly loud even when it is busy."

River blinked. "It's a robot designed to evoke the emotional response appropriate towards babies. Doesn't mean it is a baby. No thoughts in its mind." She smiled. "Wouldn't touch yours."

"That's a relief. For a minute there, I thought I was going to be told I had to read the Writ to my Impala," Dean joked. He held up the bag of food. "Feel like some lunch?"
