Lawyering Up: Class 10, Wed, Period 2

"Nice to see you all back," Nathan said as he handed out the usual packets. "Today we're talking about Internet Law, or cyber law, as some people call it. We've already covered the practical problem of how internet technology moves too fast for precedent to keep up. Now let's talk about another problem with that technology: far too many lawmakers do not understand what the internet is. I can assure you that more than one member of Congress still thinks it's a series of tubes.

"So today I want you to pretend that you're trying to advocate for a law related to the internet where you have to find a way to explain what the internet is. Metaphors, diagrams, whatever it takes. Pair up and take turns being the politician who doesn't get it. Extra credit to anybody who figures out an actual law to argue for."

[ooc: ~~wait for~~ OCD is up. Now if only I could make this migraine go away...]

Dean shrugged. "All depends on your sex life, I guess."

"There's nothing wrong with the fact that my sex life isn't like porn," Sam said. "I have enough trouble not screwing up with one girl, let alone two."

"And there's nothing wrong with a threesome if everyone's consenting," Dean said. "That's what I'm getting at -- you don't need to turn your nose up or put down stuff just because you won't do it."

"I...what? No, sex is meant for two people. Any more than that and...well, you're trying to be like a porn star, and probably failing."

"Sammy, trust me. The threesomes I've had? No one was failing anything."

Sam made a face at Dean. "I don't want to know about your threesomes, or how much you love porn. I don't need to know about any of this."

"All I'm saying is you've got to be less judgemental," Dean told him.

"There's nothing wrong with being judgemental about something that's disgusting," Sam said.

"Nice to know you think I'm disgusting," Dean said, cocking his head at his brother.

"Are you in porn movies? No," Sam said. "Therefore, you're not disgusting."

"I've had threesomes though. And you just got finished turning your nose up at anyone who does that."

"Dude, you have to admit, that's not really normal," Sam said.

"Fun, though."

Sam shook his head. "Too much of a chance for people's feelings to get hurt."

"No one's got hurt when I've done it," Dean pointed out.

"Yeah, but you don't care as deeply about the people you sleep with as I do," Sam replied. "Which isn't a bad thing. It's just different."

"And that's my point exactly. You shouldn't judge something or someone just because they're different."

"You having a threesome is different. Porn isn't different, it's just weird."

"Well, I suppose weird is better than disgusting," Dean observed.

Sam shook his head again. "I'm never going to be as comfortable with sex stuff as you are," he said. "Porn and things like it are always going to seem wrong to me."

"I'd say don't knock it till you try it, but I suppose little steps are the best," Dean said, clapping Sammy on the shoulder.

"How about non-existent steps?" Sam asked.

Dean ignored that and turned the subject back to their actual assignment. "So the internet's not just for porn, no matter what the song says. And it's a good research tool if you're a hunter. What else?"

"Socialization," Sam said. "Being able to meet people from all over the world and talk to them."

"Just stay off conspiracy boards and never accept info about secret government installations from strangers," Dean put in archly.
