Lawyering Up: Class 10, Wed, Period 2

"Nice to see you all back," Nathan said as he handed out the usual packets. "Today we're talking about Internet Law, or cyber law, as some people call it. We've already covered the practical problem of how internet technology moves too fast for precedent to keep up. Now let's talk about another problem with that technology: far too many lawmakers do not understand what the internet is. I can assure you that more than one member of Congress still thinks it's a series of tubes.

"So today I want you to pretend that you're trying to advocate for a law related to the internet where you have to find a way to explain what the internet is. Metaphors, diagrams, whatever it takes. Pair up and take turns being the politician who doesn't get it. Extra credit to anybody who figures out an actual law to argue for."

[ooc: wait for OCD is up. Now if only I could make this migraine go away...]

"Well, I think it was the same thing back then, too, really, considering everything else going on there," Turtle mused a bit with a thoughtful frown. "I just went with it, though, because, one, it wasn't like it would turn up on my permanent record, seeing as I wasn't even born yet, and, two, just admitting being a truant was a heck of a lot easier on me than what would have happened if I'd just been all, 'yeah, sir, the reason I'm not in school is because I'm really from the future and there was this whole thing with an angel and, boy, let's not forget that I woke up on the wrong side of the bed, too.' Then he really would have thought I was smart-mouthing him."

Turtle's head bobbed in an enthusiastic nod. "Which was annoying. So annoying. Forget that I'm nearly sixteen or that, you know, you can become a citizen just by being born in this country, if you're not an old fart, apparently, unless you know who to talk to first, you're nothing. I could have kicked that copper, but, you know, despite his claims, I'm a good, respectable citizen. And that would get me in more trouble, too, besides."

"But don't you start thinking I let that stop me," Turtle said, eying him a little. "Because I didn't. Had to work my butt off, but, you know, while some people might see me being young and a girl a discrimination, I can use it to my advantage a lot, too, because I'm just so darn cute. You get in with the cute factor, and then you give 'em the old one-two with how smart you are, and then you're in."

"You know what? I was thinking that too!" Turtle said, laughing a little. "That would have been a lot of fun, too, and, man, something that important...Well, I mean, clearly, it's not like they needed my help, but I would have given it my all, definitely."

Turtle's nose wrinkled a little with a shake of her head. "Nah. I think I much prefer to be the wheels than the engine in a machine. Engine's got to do a lot of work, but it's not going anywhere without wheels below it. Running the store has given me more than enough of a glimpse of what it's like to be top honcho. I mean, granted, I guess, with how we've got check and balances and all, you're not even so much the whole engine as you're just, like...a part of it. The carborator, or something..."

She let the analogy trail off there, because, when you got right down to it, Turtle knew jack about cars.

Turtle considered that and then, slowly, shook her head. "Noooo," she said, "not quite. Because I like the creating part a lot, too. I'd rather....create, implement, and clear the way for other people, so it's better or easier for them, thanks to me. A trailblazer. One of the people on that Oregon Trail game who does remember the axle, because no one else does and then it breaks. And reminds everyone to get their dysentery shots so they don't get it."

"Well, no, I think she would have been, but I'd rather be the one giving her the idea of giving it a go, and supporting her, and working through the people to try to convince them that this is their gal, than the gal herself, you know? The go-to person, the support. Putting a little elbow grease into the axles. I think that's more fun. Get too heavy into politics, and you run the risk of just being a smiling face more than a force of motion."
