Lawyering Up: Class 10, Wed, Period 2

"Nice to see you all back," Nathan said as he handed out the usual packets. "Today we're talking about Internet Law, or cyber law, as some people call it. We've already covered the practical problem of how internet technology moves too fast for precedent to keep up. Now let's talk about another problem with that technology: far too many lawmakers do not understand what the internet is. I can assure you that more than one member of Congress still thinks it's a series of tubes.

"So today I want you to pretend that you're trying to advocate for a law related to the internet where you have to find a way to explain what the internet is. Metaphors, diagrams, whatever it takes. Pair up and take turns being the politician who doesn't get it. Extra credit to anybody who figures out an actual law to argue for."

Chris looked over at her before replying.

I still want us to be friends, Lana. We were friends first and I do still care about you. I was really worried while you were gone.

Thanks, she wrote, feeling her eyes fill despite herself. That means a lot.

He almost reached over to take her hand, but then realized that would likely be inappropriate, given the circumstances.

I'm glad you're back safe. And I felt better when I got your letter and knew that Sam was there to keep an eye on you.

I was so surprised to hear they got here. I never expected that. I just... needed to write them.

She bit her lip and glanced over at him before writing the next part. Sam was only there for about the first little while. He left me a note about the coming to London to get home but it got misplaced and I didn't get it for over a year. And by then... I had another life.

Chris raised an eyebrow.

Were you happy?

She looked down at the ring on her hand, letting her hair fall over her face for a moment before lifting her pencil to write back.

Yeah, I was. Really happy. Until just before I came back.

Of course he noticed her gaze and followed it. The ring was a bit of a surprise.

I'm glad you were happy. But I'm also glad you came back.

Thanks she wrote. I really appreciate it.

She wasn't quite ready to say that she was glad she was back.
