Choosing Your Own Government--Monday, Period 5, Class #7

"Good afternoon, everyone," Vala greeted them from her regular perch on top of her desk. Her appearance was slightly different, as was her bearing, which was more regal and imperious than usual. She purposely made no eye contact with any of her students and did her best to look right through them.

"Your world has just been overtaken by a new ruler. Her guards are regularly patrolling your city, or planet, or village. Word is that she's going to be instituting new rules and policies." Vala, naturally, would have been in charge of spreading that word. "Some of these policies will not be to your benefit."

"Your task today," and here she inclined her head in acknowledgement of their existence, "is to convince her to change her mind."

Suddenly her eyes flashed gold and her voice deepened an octave, sounding both mechanical and more powerful.

"Good luck."

She was going to have to do so much drinking after this.

Why, yes, she'd just seen Space Battles, why did you ask?

"Now, I'd take that as a compliment, but somehow I don't think I'd like being stiff for the rest of my life," John replied. "What sort of exulting are we talking? Bending, scraping?"

Honestly? Vala had no idea.

"Like prayer and respectful homage, but with jazz hands."

John was a cheerleader, he could do jazz hands. "Okay, that's one I could swing. What kind of building are you looking for? Teepee? Hut? Doghouse?"

"Pyramid," she said, wondering about his mental state.

"How am I supposed to build a pyramid? No one even knows how the ancient Egyptians did it," John complained. "Maybe a model? I could get some sugar cubes. I was planning a trip to the store later."

"Just for that, we are making you Chief Technician in Charge of Mortar," she told him. "Sand, straw, and water. Have fun."

"As Chief Technician in Charge of Mortar, I'd like to remind you that all I need is Elmer's glue," John smiled. "Maybe a couple toothpicks."

He was seriously considering building a sugar cube pyramid for her later.

Her eyes would have flashed again, but the contacts were starting to hurt, so she'd taken them out.

"You'll have plenty of time to experiment in detention. Go, and don't waste my time further."

John had forgotten about the potential of detention. He sulked, but followed directions.
