Choosing Your Own Government--Monday, Period 5, Class #7

"Good afternoon, everyone," Vala greeted them from her regular perch on top of her desk. Her appearance was slightly different, as was her bearing, which was more regal and imperious than usual. She purposely made no eye contact with any of her students and did her best to look right through them.

"Your world has just been overtaken by a new ruler. Her guards are regularly patrolling your city, or planet, or village. Word is that she's going to be instituting new rules and policies." Vala, naturally, would have been in charge of spreading that word. "Some of these policies will not be to your benefit."

"Your task today," and here she inclined her head in acknowledgement of their existence, "is to convince her to change her mind."

Suddenly her eyes flashed gold and her voice deepened an octave, sounding both mechanical and more powerful.

"Good luck."

She was going to have to do so much drinking after this.

"Each person will be required to either father or give birth to three children. If a partner is infertile, I will reassign you to someone who is."

"Your high holy gloriousness," Ferris said, bowing low. "While I'm sure your plan will benefit the entire the whole city, I'd like to instead offer my services as a concubine and benefit you instead."

Ferris may have been slightly distracted by the new appearance. The eyes and voice were a little weird, but he could live with that. He turned off to the side and talked to the audience, which thankfully no one else could hear. "I realize this makes me look shallow. But look at her. Teacher or not, wouldn't you get distracted? Besides, who's she more likely to listen to, some random subject or someone who-" He tried to find the right wording. "Does the right thing by her?"

He stopped talking and turned his attention back to the scene at hand, waiting for a response.

Vala quirked a brow at Ferris, unable to believe her evil self had just been propositioned by a student. It was difficult, but she mostly managed to hide the smirk.

"While we appreciate your enthusiasm, our aim is to make sure there is a more plentiful workforce. You benefitting me in that way will do no good to achieve that goal. Much to your regret, I assure you."

"I'm sure no one here has any doubt that you're trying to enhance our civilization and make it great, but even leaders need to take a little time and human resources for themselves. It's only fair to take some considering how much time and effort you're putting into giving back to the community."

"By the end of the week," she said, feeling generous, "and you're allowed to choose your own partners."

"Um, ma'am?" Katara bit her lip. "There's a gestation period, you know. We can get started, but it's not possible to have three kids by then."

"I'm willing to be patient, since you have yet to overcome that biological deficiency."

"Uh, what if we don't want to birth three children?" Eve countered. "Any chance we can just birth one or two?" Because honestly, childbirth sucked.

Vala considered that for a second. "No. Three is the minimum number to show proper respect for your god."

"What if the person we'd want to have said children with isn't in this class?"

Vala suddenly wondered if Eve knew this was just an in-class hypothetical assignment.

"You will have to bring him to me for inspection, so that I may ascertain the quality of his genetic structure."

Or something.
