Discovery & Invention, Period 5, 13 Feb '08

"Human anatomy," said Mohinder when the class assembled. "A field in which the primary European text for over a millenia was largely based on the vivisection of dogs."

"There have been a number of religious prescriptions against conducting dissections, and although some of the earliest we know of were committed almost a thousand years ago they remained a relative rarity. Criminals could be sentenced not only to death, but also dissection. For the more serious offences."

Mohinder pointed at the diagram on the board behind him, contining a brief outline, "Circulation, digestion, respiratory, nervous, but one of the earliest system to be mapped was muscularskeleton system." And then in further detail.

"I won't ask you to commit any misdemeanors in class," and Mohinder smiled at that, "But I do want you to assemble the human skeletal system from the modelled bones in front of you," and he nodded at the boxes on the students' desks.

Rodney groaned when he saw today's subject. Biology had to be his least favorite branch of the sciences. He started to irritatedly take notes since he knew this stuff would be on a test. Rodney wasn't sure he could handle it if Clicky Pen Boy began his usual routine during the lecture. He was annoyed enough already.

Lucas really couldn't care less about bones. He half listened, half clicked the beat of a song on his pen. Okay, so it was a lot more clicking than listening.

When he heard the first click, Rodney took a deep breath. He tried to ignore it. Maybe if he could tune it out for just a few minutes it would eventually stop. The guy would surely have to take notes today.

There was nothing about the lecture Lucas felt the need to write down. Stupid. Pointless. Classes. Each word he thought was punctuated by a click.

It wouldn't be so bad if the clicks weren't totally random. Rodney snapped. He torn a blank piece of paper out of his notebook, balled it up, and threw towards Lucas' head.

Smacked out of his daydream by a paper bomb, Lucas glared at Rodney. "Hey, what was that for?"

Rodney ignored the question and returned the glare. "Just because you feel the need to revel in your skaterboy slacker persona doesn't mean that the rest of the people in this class want to fail as well."

"So what, you throw paper at me to make me pay attention?" Lucas did not get the people at this school at all. "Let me know if you find it effective." He resumed clicking his pen, completely oblivious that it was the whole problem.

Was he really that stupid? "I threw it at you so that I could pay attention," Rodney explained slowly. When the clicking recommenced, he let his head fall to his desk. "And that is so not helping," he said, slightly muffled.

"Because throwing stuff is always helpful for the attention span," Lucas rolled his eyes and shook his head.

Rodney lifted his head and stared. He could not believe this actually required an explanation. "The purpose of throwing something at you was to make you aware that your obnoxious pen clicking was distracting to others so that you would stop said clicking and thus allow your fellow classmates to focus on the lecture."

After saying this, Rodney was worried that he had used too many big words.

Lucas laughed, "Now, had you asked politely in the first place, I'd have considered your request. But since you threw paper at my head, I'm pretty sure I'm going to keep clicking."

Asked politely? Honestly, the thought had never occurred to him. Someone doing something that obnoxious and that consistently had to be doing it on purpose, thus they would be unlikely to respond to traditional methods of intervention. Rodney let his head fall back to the desk.

Always eager to please and entertain his roomie, Sokka started drumming on his desk in time to the pen clicks.

Rodney covered his head with both arms and whimpered. This was just too much. He gave up on the lecture and decided he'd learn the material on his own later. Unfortunately, this meant he'd have to spend even more time on god-awful biology. He whimpered some more.

Sokka had seen plenty of skeletons -- usually ones belonging to animals he was eating, but he'd come across a few human ones in his time. So he managed to put the skeleton together pretty quickly.

...Then, once that was done, he picked up the skull and jawbone and walked around making it talk. "Hello! How are you today? I'm feeling BONE tired, myself..."
