Maths For Real Life, Period 1, Class 6 [2/11]

""Taxes," Professor Beaubier began today's lecture, "are a fact of life. Nothing is certain but death and them, and if you live somewhere that does not have taxes, see me after class, I want to know how you do it. In the United States, you are usually taxed whenever you buy something, and must pay state income and property taxes, as well as federal income taxes. In the United States, the IRS owns your soul. Please try to remember this. You will pay them their pound of flesh, or they will hunt you down. Respect, children," he said with a wry grin.

Then he launched into a brief explanation of the American tax system as it related to them and their ability to keep any money they earned and, and the end, said, "Any questions?" After any questions that may or may not exist, he handed out some handwavy papers and said, "Next week, we will be doing our taxes, as I do not believe in leaving anything to the next minute. If you are not subject to the United States tax system, again, please see me after class, and I will see if I can procure the proper forms."

"Professor Beaubier," he questioned as he walked up after class. Privately, he was starting to wonder if the man was going to hate him after all the questions, but he was a professor and they were, at least, important questions.

"I was wondering about tax forms in different places. If you'd know if they were available anywhere to examine?"

"Certainly, sir."

He nodded with a faint smile.

That was better than he'd expected.

"I'm not going back to my own world," he said, "and taxes there aren't necessary as I barely even exist there. But I'd want to get a look at how taxes are done in whatever world I'd decide on after this place."

He rolled his eyes, which really said more than anything else just how comfortable he was starting to be with Fandom on the whole. But when he spoke, it was with a tone of mock innocence.

Teasing in return.

"Don't forget the savings on winter coats," he advised. Then he smiled.

"Thank you."

"Er. Mister Beaubier?" Jeff was wobbling in a nervous fashion.

Mind, Jeff was always wobbling in a nervous fashion. It just happened to be more nervous than usual.

"I, er, I wasn't here last week." Jeff did the obvious well. "...There was an incident," he added, helpfully.

"Well..." Jeff scratched the back of his head nervously, "Me and Karal fell into this locker, and then there was this very large man who was sort of threatening to kill us except he just wanted to sell us things, and we met this Goddess with really large breasts and Karal angered this flock of transvestites." Pause. "And then stole a midget's trousers while we were covered in chocolate." Another pause, before he added a final, "On a candy-floss sheep."

"Okay," Jeff said, pathetically grateful, and walked away.

Only to return moments later. "...Would I be able to get last week's course material?"
