Discovery & Invention, Period 5, 6 Feb '08

"Good afternoon," Mohinder hailed the class, idly tossing an apple into the air. He caught it, and weighed it thoughtfully in one hand before continuing.

"Apocryphally, Isaac Newton was struck by an apple and inspiration for universal gravitation under a tree in Oxford." Mohinder gave a grin. "We have rather more evidence that he went on to codify three laws of motion," and continued on. "During the time he wasn't drinking undercover with counterfeiters or disputing the origins of calculus, an argument halted only temporarily by his rival's death, that is."

"Much of Newton's framework depends on an idealised environment. Your desks are set up with air hockey tables." Mohinder gestured at the apparatus on the desks. "It's a near frictionless environment, so try to use them to test the laws of motion - before doing anything else with them."

[Waiting for OCD up!]

Lucas listened, clicking his pen randomly since he wasn't taking notes.

Naomi took detailed notes.

Sokka took very detailed notes, although the three laws of motion seemed pretty obvious once you thought about them.

Mac sat at her table and fiddled with the puck, pinging it back and forth between her hands. Easy entertainment that passed for work.

After a few fiddles that accounted for 'experimentation', Claire shot her puck towards Mac's.

Mac's drew her hands away sharply when something came towards her. As you do when it comes to strange objects you aren't expecting.

When she glanced around and saw Claire, though, she smiled and shot it back at her playfully. "Nice aim."

Claire grinned, and shrugged modestly as she returned it.

"Thanks."

"I'm kind of doubtful that anyone is going to get anything much scientific out of this before it dissolves into a mass air hockey battle," Mac said twirling her puck again.

Claire shrugged.

"First law," she said, leaving the puck at rest, then giving it a brief push to make it move at a steady speed from hand to hand; "second law," and she pushed it back in short bursts, making it accelerate; "third law," and this time she pushed it at Mac's puck again to make them bounce off each other.

"OK, I'm done."

Mac laughed, and nodded. "Fair enough. I'm pretty sure that was about all we were supposed to get out of this particular exercize, anyway."

Claire beamed and went back to bouncing her puck between her hand pieces, idly.

"So it's air hockey until the bell rings, right?"

"I think so..."

Mac grinned brightly. "You think you dare to take me on?"

Claire considered this for less than a second.

"Alright. You're on."

Max appeared to be idly bouncing a puck around, but she was actually sending it on specific trajectories.

Anathema was calculating every throw of her puck.

Sokka took a minute or two to experiment with the laws of motion before just having fun batting the puck around.

Peter slapped the puck around the table.

FOR SCIENCE.
