Tactics 201, Thursday Period Two, 31/01

"Hey, kids."

Lieutenant Kerrigan was doing her utmost best not to run her hand repeatedly through her hair, standing in the middle of a simulated canyon in her Ghost outfit. "We were going to do a physical exercise today, but due to circumstances beyond my control, the planning has been altered slightly. We'll be running another simulated exercise today.

"Having dealt with defensive fortification last week, we'll be working on our offense this time. You're to team up in groups of two-- one of you will be driving a Vulture cycle, which aren't hard to master, but I'd advise anyone with motorbike experience to choose this option to make it easier on your classmates, while the other uses four NPC Marines around the canyon walls to try to take the Vulture out. Vulture drivers, your job's to get to the flashing signal at the end of the canyon."

When in doubt, go with class plans a colleague came up with. "Good hunting."

[ wait for the ocd up! ]

It's a good thing their aim was off, because Sokka started evasive maneuvering and dodged right into the hail of bullets. He "eep!"ed as he watched the chassis integrity readout start to drop, and worked on trying to evade the other way, away from the bullets.

Sky could not suppress a hiss of triumph, at the same time being glad he wasn't down there, because he would undoubtedly make similar mistakes. Focusing on this was a nice distraction.

"Keep it up!" he encouraged as they took off in pusuit of Sokka.

Well, now the marines were behind him and all he had to do was get out of range before the bike exploded, without hitting the walls of the canyon. Time for some fancy dodging!

Sokka gunned the engine and aimed directly at a suitable rock. There was a very bad-sounding scrape from the undercarriage of the Vulture, and then it was airborne, sailing a few yards over the ground.

Sky hadn't been expecting that. He ran as fast as he could, but found that he had trouble keeping up, and Sokka going airborne threw his aim off. Still, he kept doggedly peppering him with fire, as did the Marines.

"Clever," Sky mumbled.

Unfortunately, the landing wasn't nearly as nice as the takeoff. Something got damaged, there was smoke, and the Vulture started listing slightly to port. Sokka yoked back on the throttle as it went into a flat spin and got harder and harder to control, and eventually ended up driving in lazy circles a few dozen yards from the flashing beacon with an alarm warning him that chassis integrity was nearing critical failure.

Ever the innovator, Sokka hopped out and attempted to sprint the rest of the way.

"Yes," Sky hissed, but then hesitated. He wasn't expected to shoot at Sokka now that he didn't have the bike, was he? His partner was still clad in armor, of course, but...

"SOKKA!" he called down as loud as he could. "STOP, I DON'T WANT TO SHOOT YOU!"

Without slowing down much, Sokka readied his own gun and fired a spray of bullets randomly over his shoulder.

"WE'RE IN THE DANGER ROOM!" he called back.

Well, that did it. Sky was forced to dodge as a few random bullets nearly their mark and resolutely took off after Sokka, leaving the Marines behind in his haste. His own aim was pretty steady but off a little due both to anger and running over rough terrain.

"SUIT YOURSELF, THEN!" Sky yelled, firing.

There went that alarm again -- except this time it was his armor that was about to fail. Sokka made one last, desperate leap and reached the beacon, laying his hands on it as bullets peppered his body. Then he slumped onto the ground and didn't move for a long, long time.

"Owwwww... That HURTS."

Sky felt immensely guilty as he reached a good place to climb down and did so as fast as he could, running up to Sokka.

"Hey, man, are you alright?" he asked, concerned. "I hope I didn't hurt you."

"Nah, I'm fine," Sokka lied. "It'll take more than a few dozen pretend bullets to stop the likes of me." He grinned. "Besides, I totally won."

"You sure did. That was impressive," Sky said, nodding. He offered a hand for a high-five. "Great job."

Sokka slapped him some skin. "You, too."

"... Even though you shoot like a girl."
