"I can't teach class today, I have a headache," Mohinder - this time wearing the more traditional white coat - said, holding a straight-face for a few seconds. "Or rather," as he put a small bottle of pills on the desk he was leaning against, "Today we'll be looking at pain relief."

"We're all wired to feel pain," continued Mohinder. "An individual warning system, without which our lives would almost certainly be much shorter. Alleviating pain takes one of three major pathways - inhibiting nerve endings at the pain site, numbing the central nervous system or local anaesthetics."

Mohinder went on to briefly touch on pain medications in general, before turning and sketching out a chemical formula on the board behind him, still talking. "Salicin was discovered as the active ingredient in willow bark, developed into salicylic acid, which was converted into sodium salicylate, before modification by a German chemist finally produced aspirin."

Looking back at the class Mohinder said, "This included testing of the experimental drugs on the chemist's father - now considered something completely unethical. You have salycilic and acetic acid on your desks, and also coats and goggles. Be sure to wear them when you use the equipment in front of you to prepare aspirin."

"Perhaps, of your early years," said Mohinder, thinking this through. "But information about any pursuit, surveillance or even capture of your group would likely be unaffected. If difficult to get at."

"I'm also afraid to poke around too much for fear of tipping them off to my location," Max admitted.

"Of course," Mohinder nodded. "Perhaps you can consider Fandom to be something of a safe haven."

"It seems to be. You're the second person I've told my secret to."

"I'll be sure to keep it to myself." Which Max hadn't asked, but still.

Max nodded. "I appreciate that."

"I know I'm unfamiliar with your particular branch of genetic manipulation, but if you find you need someone who knows their way around a helix, I'd be happy to help," offered Mohinder, scientific curiousity surfacng just a little.

"I do have some questions about my genetic makeup," Max admitted. She was a little uneasy about letting herself become a lab rat though.

"Have you tried looking for answers before?" Mohinder asked, before speculating, "Identifying the differences from the standard human genetic code should be possible. But from there?" He shrugged. "There are lot of avenues you could explore."

Max shook her head. "I've been too busy focusing on surviving."

"That must have been a remarkable test of your physical abilities, especially to start with," said Mohinder, as the thought of Molly crossed his mind.

"We knew there had to be something better out there," Max said.

"Did you have much contact with the outside world, before the escape?" asked Mohinder.

"None," Max said. "We had no idea what we were going to find when we escaped."

"Have you had much chance to catch up here?"

Then, because putting Max's two statements together didn't seem to be heading anywhere near good, but more samples just made scientific good sense. "So you don't know if there were other- test centres?"

"Well, considering that this is technically a year before my escape, I'm not sure how similar things are, but yeah," Max said.

She frowned though at his question. "I have no idea."

"I hope your situation was unique," replied Mohinder. "But it's certainly possible that isn't - or won't be the case." He gave a rueful half-smile, "Time travel can be hard on the tenses."
