Maths For Real Life, Period 1, Class 4 [1/28]

"At some point," Jean-Paul said, "you are all going to have to create a budget. Some of you already have," he added with a slant of his eyes toward Liir, "and this is good, but some of you either are not that concerned about your money or can simply ask for more whenever you need it. I assure you this will not always be the case."

Jean-Paul began to pace as he spoke. "The largest part of your outgoing expenses will be, by far, toward housing. As a rule, you should never spend more than thirty percent of your income on rent, and no more than thirty-five to forty percent on a mortgage payment. Then there is the electricity bill, the water bill, paying someone to take away your trash, and perhaps a cable bill--as always, your world may differ on any of these points. Then you must feed and clothe yourself, pay for insurance and transportation, and buy all those little things that make life worth living. And it would be nice to have some savings, too, would it not? It all adds up. Very quickly. Now. I have provided a few different worksheets on budgeting for you to play around with. Feel free to alter them to suit your needs, but try to be reasonable. Have fun and, if creating a budget for your imaginary future self, try to be at least a little realistic."

((Disclaimer: While I remember the Aunt Purl worksheet as being very helpful, it only opens in Excel. I don't have Excel on this computer and therefore cannot be sure it's as good as I remember.))

Jeff, as per usual, was writing a gargantuan amount of notes and potentially considering asking Turtle about a few budgetting matters regarding the store.

Maybe he should go over her budget some time. You never knew if she'd missed anything.

Makoto was taking notes. Many notes. He knew for sure that this would be something important to know later.

He was taking notes. Like the rest of the math geeks students.

Typically, Adah was very good at listening to lectures in this class. It was math and it was important, and this particular lesson was exceptionally so, since her future would be very focused around managing her money well if she wanted to avoid the financial debt of student loans and the spiritual debt of the fact that the majority of her tuition was being covered by her father's past as a veteran. At least she'd have the comfort of knowing that if Nathan Price knew how his service was paying off for something like a woman getting an education, he'd be furious.

But she couldn't pay attention. She slumped over her desk slightly, not even writing as her hand was too busy propping up her forehead. She blinked, one eye covered by her palm but the other peering out from her hand and staring bleakly in a vain attempt to seem to be paying attention. This class was too early after the stress last night had put on her body. The only thing keeping her from just raising her hand and asking to be excused was the confidence that she had done damn well and the occasional drifting thought of how this would soon be over, and then she can stay comfortably in bed, well into tomorrow morning, where the comfortable in bed part would get much, much nicer.

It was those thoughts that accounted for the tiredly stupid grin on her face as she sat there like warmed-over death and blanking out from anything else.

Michael was taking notes that practically covered every word the professor said. For this topic? Yeah.

Cedric had no idea what a budget was so he was taking a lot of notes.

By the end of class, Jeff had twenty-five different budgets. Only half of which were fictional.

He chose to err on the side of making less than he hoped to make eventually. After all, he knew that at least at first he wouldn't be making much as an actor and would probably have to work another job.

All the things Professor Beaubier had mentioned were things he was considering, along with a few other things that he considered vital. He also made up a few permutations, a set of them for handling a financial crisis (both personal and otherwise), and one that included a pet.

...he'd been thinking.

Michael's budget was based on the money he'd been used to spending on food up to now.

It was pretty much what he thought he could steal from Hank's wallet without getting caught, so it was a little scanty.

Cedric managed a haphazard budget with columns for all things magic and non magic.

Harry was entertaining himself with the budget sheet. He had a column for egg baby expenses, even. And one for "stuff I accidentally (or on purpose) set on fire."

Jess the egg baby was watching the proceedings as much as an eyeless egg can.
