Discovery & Invention, Period 5, 16 Jan '08

The Danger Shop appeared to be set up as a normal classroom, bits and pieces of technical equipment lying around. It was only on looking up that would show any difference - an almost pitch black space, scattered with stars.

"We are all insignificant." Mohinder looked enthused at the idea, as he continued, "Occupying only a little space and time on a minor planet, under an ordinary star which is itself one among many, in one of innumerable galaxies. On such a scale our actions are unimportant." He paused, "Though I doubt that will work as an excuse for a missed class."

"But five hundred years ago the most common view was of an earth-centric universe." Mohinder briefly covered the leading figures, behind that change of thought. He picked up a handheld telescope from the desk at the front of the classroom. "The invention of the telescope finally meant there was the opportunity to back their claims with evidence."

"There are, in front of you, all you need to build a refractive or reflective telescopes. Pair up, and take a closer look at the stars." Mohinder pointed up.

Coraline considered the options, then chose the instructions (http://www.nasa.gov/audience/foreducators/informal/features/F_Build_a_Telescope.html) for a refractive telescope, and everything she'd need to make it.

The lenses were a bit fingerprinty, so she was carefully cleaning them on the edge of her shirt.

"Getting on all right?" Sokka asked his little sib, as he swiped a few parts. "How are you liking Fandom so far?"

"I was until someone took some of my telescope bits," she teased, setting down the lens. "I think I do like it, quite a lot. And I think my roommate may have been bitten by a gremlin on Saturday."

Max was pretty good with machines.

She decided to build a reflective telescope, gathered all the materials she needed and set to work.

While not exactly great at building things, this really couldn't be that hard, right? And there were instructions, and it wasn't possible to misread instructions at all.

Anathema got everything she would need and started putting it all together. The scary part was that she had already built a telescope before.

Sokka read through the instructions, and took notes on them, and fiddled with all the parts, deducing a few principles of optics as he went along. Then he "borrowed" materiel off other people's desks and cobbled together a three-foot-long monstrosity that showed, at 1000x magnitude, a piece of dust that had gotten caught somewhere in the middle.

Since they'd just heard about Galileo, Rodney decided to build a refractive telescope. He assembled his quickly and was soon examining the image of the sky above him. One of these days, he was going to have to take this room apart and see what made it tick.

Sokka leaned over and peered into the other end of the telescope, blocking his roomie's view. "Pretty sweet, Meredith!" He grabbed a handful of pieces Rodney hadn't used and nodded at his own half-completed project. "It's nothing compared to mine, though. Don't be afraid to be intimidated -- you can admit it: I'm awesome."

Rodney emitted a small squeak when a giant eye appeared before him, but he recovered quickly enough to glare at Sokka for using his first name. Again. He decided not to complain about it though as that only seemed to encourage his roommate. "Intimidated?" Rodney scoffed and looked over at Sokka's... whatever that was supposed to be. "Please."

Naomi got what she needed and started building her telescope.
