Discovery & Invention, Period 5, 16 Jan '08

The Danger Shop appeared to be set up as a normal classroom, bits and pieces of technical equipment lying around. It was only on looking up that would show any difference - an almost pitch black space, scattered with stars.

"We are all insignificant." Mohinder looked enthused at the idea, as he continued, "Occupying only a little space and time on a minor planet, under an ordinary star which is itself one among many, in one of innumerable galaxies. On such a scale our actions are unimportant." He paused, "Though I doubt that will work as an excuse for a missed class."

"But five hundred years ago the most common view was of an earth-centric universe." Mohinder briefly covered the leading figures, behind that change of thought. He picked up a handheld telescope from the desk at the front of the classroom. "The invention of the telescope finally meant there was the opportunity to back their claims with evidence."

"There are, in front of you, all you need to build a refractive or reflective telescopes. Pair up, and take a closer look at the stars." Mohinder pointed up.

Coraline listened closely, though her notes were part notes, part doodles, and part random meaningless squiggles.

She couldn't help but feel disappointed in Galileo for recanting his idea, though she decided she was quite fond of the word heliocentric.

In large letters in the centre of a clean page, she wrote HELIOCENTRIC, then drew a little sun spinning around it.

"And yet it moves," Coraline said under her breath. She liked that, too.

See, this was the kind of class that Mac could get into.

She was definitely with the notes-taking.

Max was taking notes.

Lucas had a blue retractable pen. He was clicking it in patterns.

*clicky click*

He was considering the noise it made and what kind of story he could write about people who clicked pens.

Naomi took detailed notes.

Hermione took notes, barely managing not to shush anyone who might be talking, or say, clicking pens, though she did glare a few times.

Pam took a lot of notes, carefully tuning out any talking or irritating pen-clicking that might be going on.

It's entirely possible that her margins had a few little portraits of people in the class, too. Maybe a couple of the teacher. He really was awfully pretty.

Anathema took careful notes and considered breaking the clicky pen.

Sokka took lots and lots of very detailed notes. Still, something wasn't sitting right with him.

"Uh... The universe is really, really big. I get that. REALLY big. But, uh... I'm not sure why you think that means we're unimportant. 'Cause... I think we are, you know? Everything's important."

"Oh, you did NOT just say that!" Sokka said, gaping at him. "First of all, YES, a small change in one place can have all sorts of consequences, and secondly, since when is whether or not someone's IMPORTANT determined by the SCOPE of their IMPACT???" Mohinder got a Look. "EVERY person is important. When people forget that, that's when wars happen."

Rodney took detailed notes on the lecture while he daydreamed about throwing something at the annoying kid with the pen. He was good at multitasking like that.

As he took notes, Peter was keeping a running tally of pen clicks that he heard. Somebody would think of something good to do with those statistics later on.
