Library [11/01]

It was deja vu all over again as Karal opened the library for the second day in a row.

Well, deja vu apart from the Firecat draped over his shoulder. Altra had flatly refused to walk in the snow, so Karal was having to juggle cat, tea, and the keys while snow slowly melted and soaked his socks.

Altra was snickering at Karal. This would be because Karal was walking around the library in bare feet while his socks and shoes dried (hopefully) near the heat vent.

Karal was still barefoot, but he'd solved the problem of cold feet.

It turned out Firecats were very warm -- Altra was lying on his feet while he checked in books.

A steaming cup of tea in hand, Karal was standing by a window, watching the intermittent snow fall. Altra was draped over the windowsill, nose pressed against the glass.

Lunch brought with it soup and socks; the former was warm, the latter were dry and warm.

The library's closed to all but aides, librarians, and guests.

Shoes dried, socks dried, and both back on his feet where they belonged, Karal was puttering around in the history sections.

Altra, tail twitching, eyes narrowed to slits, was stalking something through the stacks.

After class, Seregil wasn't ready to brave the cold and snow again so he decided to check out the library instead.

Karal turned around when he heard someone come into the library. "Hello, Seregil," he greeted him. "Would you like a cup of tea to warm up after being out in the snow?"

"Yes, please," Seregil said, heartfelt. "I'm not a big fan of snow."

"I enjoy it, especially when I can watch it from inside a warm library." He was still barefoot as he walked over to pour Seregil a cup of tea. "Traipsing through it isn't as much fun."

"That's the part I don't like much too," Seregil said, smiling gratefully when he was handed the tea. "And I wouldn't mind even that if it wasn't so blasted cold."

"It would be much more fun if we could have snow when it was bright and sunny," he laughed. "But sadly, I think that's unlikely even in Fandom."

"Is snow a regular thing here?" Seregil asked.

"I think there's been one, maybe two days when we had snow this winter," he said, trying to remember. He hadn't paid much attention. "But it was nothing as much as this. Does it snow much where you're from?

"Not where I grew up," Seregil said. "Too far south. And Rhiminee tends more towards sleet than snow. There are places up in Mycena though that get a lot."

"Karse is very cold, far colder than here. Lots of snow." He smiled. "I was quite enjoying the warmer winter. Hopefully it will melt soon, and we can go back to being only slightly cold, instead of surrounded by ice."

"Hopefully. Although I have to say there's something to be said for this dimension's heating systems."

"Very true. It's an improvement over fireplaces, though I miss them sometimes." Karal finished his tea and set the cup down. "Now, what brings you to the library? Are you after something specific?"

Seregil shook his head. "No, not really. There's so much to learn, it's hard to narrow it down to anything specific."

"And there are so many books!" He was practically bouncing. "On so many different topics, most of which are things I'd never even heard of! I admit, I wandered the shelves for many hours, pulling out books at random, when I first got here. Well, once the library was put back together."

"But back together?" Seregil asked curiously. "Was it apart?"

"It, well, the library was intact, but all the books had fallen off the shelves, gotten all tumbled together. It was before I arrived, but aliens - beings from other planets - destroyed the school. It was rebuilt last summer."

Seregil cocked his head to the side as he tried to imagine that. "That must've been some extremely powerful magic the... aliens used."

"It was not magic, I don't think. I think it was technology of some kind. It is," he shook his head and laughed, "it's very confusing. Sometimes it's just easier to think of it all as magic."

"Their gadgets and devices are so very complicated," Seregil agreed. "It's going to take a while to learn them."

"They have cars, which are like a carriage but with no horses, and they go faster than a horse can run, faster even that a gryphon can fly!" Karal shook his head at the memory. "I used to wonder why Vkandis Sunlord sent me here, but now I suspect it was at least partly so I would be used to very strange things."

"Yes, that's a lot of the reason Nysander asked me to come here," Seregil said. He tilted his head curiously. "Vkandis Sunlord -- is that your kingdom's ruler?"

"Oh! No, no, Vkandis Sunlord is my god. I mean, not mine alone, He is Karse's, I'm His priest," he explained. "The Son of the Sun, who's head of the church, is the ruler of Karse."

Seregil's eyes glinted with interest. "Sounds a little like Sakor."

"Sakor?" Karal asked curiously.

"One of the Sacred Four back in Skala," Seregil said. "He guards the hearth and directs the sun. He's the god of soliders and enflames the minds of your enemies."

"Your world is shared between four gods?" Karal asked, surprised. "Skala does sound a bit like Vkandis. I wonder..." He trailed off, completely lost in thought.

Seregil nodded. "The Sacred Four: Dalna, Astellus, Sakor and Illior. Illior -- or Aura in the tongue of my people -- is the one I follow. The Lightbearer sends dreams and magic, watches over seers, wizards and thieves."

It was enough to knock him out of his reverie, and he raised an eyebrow at Seregil, smiling a little. "And which are you?"

Seregil smiled. "Well, I'm no seer and my attempt at learning to be a wizard ended in failure..."

Karal laughed and shook his head. "No stealing the books," he warned. "The library's very protective of them."

"Thieving is actually more of a... hobby," Seregil said. "Or a skill set at least."

"Just as well." There was just the tiniest note of warning as he added, "I don't think it would go over well, were you to practice it here."

"I don't steal from friends," Seregil assured him.

"I'm a priest, so I must tell you you shouldn't steal at all," he said, assuming his most pious expression, but behind it he looked amused. "But you can feel free to take no notice of it."

"Usually priests make me.... uneasy," Seregil admitted. Uneasy of course was something of an understatement, especially when they were talking about rhui'auros. "But you are remarkably unmysterious for a priest."

Karal laughed. "I'm definitely not mysterious," he agreed.

Seregil grinned. "You might want to work on that. I'm not sure priests are allowed to be unmysterious."
