fandomhigh | Fandom Invasions Class #1 (Thursday, period 4)

John was waiting at the front of the classroom, leaning on his desk as the students filed in.

"Good morning," he said with a smile, when everyone was settled. "Welcome to Fandom Invasions. I'm sure all of you have noticed by now that Fandom is a rather unusual place. It's what makes it such a good fit for so many of us who don't really fit in elsewhere, but it also has a downside. Namely, that invasions of varying kinds happen on a disturbingly regular basis. If you haven't been through one yet, chances are very good that you will before you leave. The purpose of this class is to make sure you're prepared when that happens by looking at invasions of the past.

"If you look at the syllabus, you'll see a list of which past events we'll be focusing on and when. We'll be making extensive use of simulations and for that reason, we'll be meeting in the Danger Shop starting next week and every week thereafter.

"For this first class, I want to get to know you and your experience with the stranger aspects of Fandom. So I'd like to go around the room and have everyone introduce themselves, tell how long they've been in Fandom, and talk about the weirdest thing that's happened to them since they've been here.

"I'll start," John said with a slightly wolfish smile. "My name is John Winchester and this is my second year teaching here. One of many weird things that I've done in the time I've been here is stalk and kill a genuine saber tooth cat practically right on my doorstep. More recently, me and my boys had to go get our Christmas presents back from a little green thief who talked in rhyme and called himself the grinch." He looked around and picked a student at random. "Next?"

When everyone had had their turn, John continued, "As you can see, there is no lack of weirdness to go around. Hopefully by the end of this class, you'll be as prepared as possible to deal with the next strange thing that happens." He looked around at the class. "Any questions?"

Ino was all but bouncing in her seat. This really was the best semester ever - all her classes were totally awesome. Simulations!

"You don't think we'll actually have to fight anything in class?" asked Hoshi nervously.

Ino was possibly not the best one to ask. "Wouldn't that be awesome if we did?" She said cheerfully.

"Not if you can't fight back," said Hoshi, her cheeks turning pink.

That made Ino pause. "Well," she said, after a moment, "I'll stick close to you if we've got to fight, okay?"

"Thanks," said Hoshi gratefully. "I should probably work on my fighting skills. It may come in handy in class, even if I never get attacked again."

Besides, you never know when a girl in space will have to defend herself against vicious aliens.

"It's so not a problem, I'm happy to do it." Ino grinned. "And working on fighting skills is a whole lot of fun," she said brightly, "it's very theraputic hitting things when you're mad." The voice of experience here.

Hoshi wasn't the type to get mad very often, but the frustrating experiences she had at home definitely made her want to punch something. "I could give it a try," she said.

"Start with something softish." Ino advised. "Hitting a wall or something will just hurt your hand and make you feel worse."

"Like those punching bags at the gym?" suggested Hoshi.

"Those would work," she nodded, "or a mattress turned up on it's side."

"I do have an extra bed now that I don't have a roommate this semester," said Hoshi, thinking.

"And that way, if you're angry you can just lock the door and not have to worry about an audience. The gym's a bit open if you want to just vent, you know?"

Seeing the other girl in his class (and that was very helpful, having her in his class) made him realize something.

"Incidentally," he said in a whisper to her, "when should I come by? I don't recall you saying."

Considering what the professor was saying, he didn't want to be unprepared for things. Or more unprepared than he had to be.

That? That would be Ino blushing because she'd totally forgot to tell him that. "Well," she said, after a moment, "I work Wednesdays, so it's easiest if you could come by then, but if you'd still like a lesson this week we could do something tomorrow?"

"I don't have any class on Wednesdays, so that works normally. I do work tomorrow, but if it's after five, I could go."

He paused.

"Though you don't have to if you're busy."

And now, a longer pause.

"And I didn't think of it either," he said, guessing at the reason for her blush.

"I still should've thought of it," Ino said stubbornly, "Sorry about that. And I can't tomorrow evening - I've already got plans. Are you busy on Sunday? I should have time then."

"Not that I know of, no. Sunday's fine."

And then he thought of something.

"Thank you. By the way."

"How about Sunday morning then? At the gym?" Ino grinned at him, "And it's not a problem. Everyone should know at least the basics of how to fight."

"I can be there. As soon as I get up, or a specific time?"

"As long as you don't sleep in way late I'm fine," Ino said, "I'll show up early to get some practice of my own in anyway, so come whenever."

"I'm up at dawn, usually," he admitted. After all, nature had provided an alarm clock. He might as well use it.

Ino stared at him a moment, then grinned, "Show up about an hour or so after that, okay? I'll be there by then."

"All right. Is there anything I should do or bring? Lana showed me some stretches."

"Dress comfortably," Ino said with a shrug, "and you can stretch beforehand if you want but I'm going to be going over them with you so I can see for myself that you've got them down. It'd be sloppy to not to."
