Fandom Invasions Class #1 (Thursday, period 4)

John was waiting at the front of the classroom, leaning on his desk as the students filed in.

"Good morning," he said with a smile, when everyone was settled. "Welcome to Fandom Invasions. I'm sure all of you have noticed by now that Fandom is a rather unusual place. It's what makes it such a good fit for so many of us who don't really fit in elsewhere, but it also has a downside. Namely, that invasions of varying kinds happen on a disturbingly regular basis. If you haven't been through one yet, chances are very good that you will before you leave. The purpose of this class is to make sure you're prepared when that happens by looking at invasions of the past.

"If you look at the syllabus, you'll see a list of which past events we'll be focusing on and when. We'll be making extensive use of simulations and for that reason, we'll be meeting in the Danger Shop starting next week and every week thereafter.

"For this first class, I want to get to know you and your experience with the stranger aspects of Fandom. So I'd like to go around the room and have everyone introduce themselves, tell how long they've been in Fandom, and talk about the weirdest thing that's happened to them since they've been here.

"I'll start," John said with a slightly wolfish smile. "My name is John Winchester and this is my second year teaching here. One of many weird things that I've done in the time I've been here is stalk and kill a genuine saber tooth cat practically right on my doorstep. More recently, me and my boys had to go get our Christmas presents back from a little green thief who talked in rhyme and called himself the grinch." He looked around and picked a student at random. "Next?"

When everyone had had their turn, John continued, "As you can see, there is no lack of weirdness to go around. Hopefully by the end of this class, you'll be as prepared as possible to deal with the next strange thing that happens." He looked around at the class. "Any questions?"

"I'm Alex Russo," she smiled, pausing for a moment. "I'm one of the new students, a freshman. I haven't exactly had a weird Fandom experience yet, to be honest."

John smiled a little. "That is something that will probably change eventually," he said.

"Hi! I'm Yamanaka Ino, and I've been here since September. Hands down the weirdest thing I've experienced? Well... it's kind of a toss up between losing my memories for an entire weekend, or having myself from twenty years in the future show up for my twenty year reunion." Ino nodded. "That was pretty weird. On the cute side of weird though? The invasion of wee little knights was totally the coolest thing."

"Considering the amount of times people think they're someone else, maybe everyone should consider keeping a paper with your basic information on it as a precaution."

"My name is Hoshi Sato, and this is my second semester here," said Hoshi. "And my weirdest Fandom experience to date? Well, I got attacked by a vampire (http://itsjustlanguage.livejournal.com/3893.html)." Hoshi was still embarrassed that she couldn't fight back and had to be rescued, so she kind of sunk lower into her chair as she talked.

"I've been dealing with attacks like that for over a decade," John told her. "Surviving is victory all on its own."

"Liir Thropp," he said, "And I'm a new student. So I haven't really had many strange experiences here. I've been told that will change."

John gave him an encouraging smile. "It probably will, but I'm sure you'll handle them."

"I'm Meg Manning, I've been here since September," she said. "The weirdest experience to date was when I got attacked by a vampire and then was healed by a half-angel a few days later."

"Sounds like that was a full week," John commented with a smile.

"I'm called Andros," Andros said, "I'm a freshmen and I've been here since May. One of my weirdest experiences would probably have been having an encounter with one those dinosaur creatures,"

"Dinosaurs always count as weird," John agreed.

"I'm Savannah Levine. I'm a sophomore and this is my second semester in Fandom. And I think my weirdest experience was losing my memory for an entire weekend... or the dinosaurs."

She didn't want to talk about when she aged twenty years for some weid Fandom reunion.

"I wouldn't be surprised if sometime we were invaded by amnesiac dinosaurs," John said dryly.

"I'm Teyla Emmagan," she said. "I am a new student as well, so I have yet to have any strange experiences, although now I find myself wondering if that will change soon."

"The weirdest thing that could happen would be nothing weird happening," John said dryly.

"I'm Luke Skywalker, a senior, and I've been here for almost two years." He smiled at Professor Winchester. "I guess the weirdest thing still is trying to get used to a 25-year-old version of my father teaching class today."

"Michael Guerin, I've been here a little under a week. Weirdest experience would have to be running into the sister who's six months older than me at home and three years older here."

"My older son was once four years older than my younger son. He's now only one year older," John said. "Family is still family though no matter differences in age."

"I'm James Sullivan, but call me Sulley. I've been here since September and, uh, I'd have to say the weirdest thing I've run into in Fandom are humans. We don't have any humans where I come from, so this is new for me. Or was. A little of both. I'm getting used to the idea."

"I'm Johnny Storm, a junior, and I've been here since the beginning of last summer. I guess for me the weirdest Fandom experience so far would be when I was bit by a gremlin. I thought I was a gay cowboy and spent all day outside, looking for cattle that I was supposed to herd." 'Cause yeah, that had been freaky.
